I watched the sad exchange unfold in front of me. Luke was using the remaining bullets he had to hold off the guards.

"Even now, you're still looking out for me. Thanks for being such a great friend." David smiled at her melancholically.

"See? I told you. You and Jonathon were meant to be. Name your firstborn child after me if you ever have any," he half joked. Vera started sobbing.

"You have to go," David gently nudged her to leave and she nodded understandingly through her tears.

They embraced, no doubt, for the final time. David stroked her hair and planted a light kiss on her forehead.

I could see the way they looked at each other.

And I finally understood it wasn't romantic.

It was family love.

They saw each other as siblings.

For once, I didn't feel any form of jealousy towards the Irish man.

"Guys! I'm out," Luke shouted, "We have to move!"

David nodded.

"Goodbye Vera," he paused to wipe her tears.

"You don't need me anymore for your nightmares, you have Jonathon now. You'll be alright. I promise," he coaxed with every ounce of his guarantee. I hadn't known him for long but my heart felt heavy.

Vera softly smiled at her friend.

"Goodbye Nagle."

""I'll see you at work tomorrow, okay?" The quivering of his voice gave away that it was a big lie. He knew this was his final stand.

I could see what he was doing. He wanted to redeem himself. He didn't want to die a person who had betrayed his best friend. He wanted to die with morality.

We started to bolt for the nearest exit and Vera turned around for the last time to see her friend firing violently below at the men.

We finally reached the rooftop where Luke's helicopter was waiting. The weather wasn't looking too good as streaks of pure white crackled against the somber grey sky. The rain droplets were heavy and I felt my hoodie getting soaked. I looked over at Vera to see if she was at discomfort, unfortunately and fortunately, she didn't seem to care.

My mother shot her a sympathetic look as we boarded.

Our helicopter started to depart, and I saw Vera staring intently at the building below.

"We're going to find Fong and kill that son of a bitch."
