Caitlyn gets out of the car, waving slightly to her dad before going to her bench. Carter runs over, his hair messy, like usual. "Hey, Cait!" He says handing her a carnation and sitting next to her.
"Hey Cart! Who do you have this year?" Caitlyn asks greeting her best friend with a hug.
"I got Mrs. Mason!" He replies she smiles, it transforms her, making her seem much older.
"Me too!" She reveals Carter cheers.
"Tommy did too!!" Carter exclaims proudly, Caitlyn deflates a bit.
"Cool. How was-"
"Hey! Carter! Come play!" Tommy interrupts Caitlyn from across the schoolyard.
"Sorry, Cait! I did promise, Tommy, I'd play a quick game before school today." Carter apologizes, she smiles sadly, trying to hide how upset she is.
"It's fine." She lies, he grins making his eyes light up.
"Just this once!" Carter promises, kissing Caitlyn's cheek. "See you in class!" He calls back, running over to where Tommy's waiting.
'Just this once!' He promised, Caitlyn knew it was a lie as soon as he'd said it. And she was right. Every day he'd leave a flower and a note apologizing and saying he'd be there tomorrow. Every day no him. Soon, Caitlyn gave up hoping for her best friend to be there. She moved on.
