letter #16My entire family loved you.
On top of being Ethan's best friend, you and Cameron were pretty close. You got along with my mom so well, and my dad adored you too. I remember the first time I ever talked to my mom about you.
Me and E were home for about a week, in August, about two months before our college classes started. Mom was making cute Halloween decorations, like she always did two months before the actual holiday itself.
I had walked into the kitchen and grabbed an apple, looking down at my phone, hoping you'd text me but knowing you probably wouldn't until later that night. You were with your mom and your sister, and you had already told me that didn't leave much time for conversation. You didn't get to see them often, so I knew the time was important.
To my surprise, however, you texted a simple text, making my whole face light up. It read, I miss you.
It was more than enough to satisfy my heart, though. My chest was warm as I texted you back. When I turned to leave the kitchen, my mom called my name from the table.
"Gray? Can you come here a second?"
I stopped in my steps, turning around and making my way to the table. I laughed slightly at the clutter of decorations and the glitter smudged on my mom's cheek, sitting down next to her.
"Yeah, mom?"
She put the tape down and stared up at me smiling. "You know you can tell me anything, right sweetie?"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Of course, mom." I racked my brain looking for anything she could know. "What's this about?"
She smiled at me softly, eyes looking at me in that way that only mom's can do. Like they know something even if you're not saying it.
"Nothing," she said, continuing her work. I waited a few seconds, knowing it was coming. "It's just that you've been on your phone a lot more lately. And you keep getting this cute little smile on your face when you look at it."
I felt the heat rush to my cheeks immediately. "Well, uh, I-I-" I stuttered violently, not knowing exactly what to say.
"So, who is she?" I gave her a look. "Or is it a him? I don't really care. I just want details." Her face was unconcerned.
I threw a glue stick at her. "Mom! If you must know, it's a girl. And her name is-" I hesitated. Were me and you serious enough for me to be telling my mom? We'd been officially together for about two months, knowing each other for one before. I had no idea how this whole 'relationship' thing went, especially when I had only had one in my lifetime, and that being in early highschool days.
Everything with me recently, before you had been hookups and a few exclusive meetups, but nothing serious enough to put a label on.
"Well?" My mom snapped me out of my thoughts. "Are you gonna tell me or what? I'm not getting any younger you know."
