I hopped over the fence and into the yard. I looked around to make sure no one was watching, before silently sneaking over to the flower garden. I pulled my knife out of my pocket and started picking the prettiest flowers I could find. Not too many that they would be noticed, but enough that I was satisfied.
Just as I stood up, a hand clasped my shoulder. I dropped the knife and whirled around. Staring at me were bright blue eyes.
"Well, I finally caught you," the man said. "You've taking flowers from my garden for almost a year."
I clutched the flowers tightly and said, "I need them for a girl."
The man raised an eyebrow. "Really? I don't have a problem with that, but I'm going to need to see this girl."
I looked up at him. "How are you going to do that?"
"I'm going to come with you," he said, smiling. "Got to see if this girl is pretty enough to warrant flower theft," he joked.
I stared at him for a moment, and I could see that he was serious about going with me. "Come on then," I said. "It's not far."
As we were walking, the man said, "My name's Will, by the way. Just thought you should know."
"Nico."
We turned a corner and stopped in front of a wrought iron fence. "Here?" he asked, shock written on his face. I nodded, and opened the gate. Stepping though, he looked around, then looked at me when I stopped.
"Hey, Mom," I whispered as I placed the flowers next to her headstone. "I brought someone with me. His name is Will. He may have caught me when I was getting flowers from his garden." I looked up at him with watery eyes. He smiled at me and came over.
"Hello, ma'am," he said. "You have a very nice son here. He's been sneaking into my garden for the past year to get you flowers. I don't mind, though. As long as they're going to a good place. He smiled at me, and I did the same back.
Over the next few years, Will came with me to the cemetary every time. Only a few weeks after he caught me, he asked me out, and we had been dating ever since. On our third anniversary, he took me there, despite my protests.
"Will, we don't have to be here. I know this isn't what you want to do on our anniversary," I said when we stopped at my mother's grave.
"I wanted your mother to see this," he replied. I tilted my head in confusion, but my hands flew to my mouth when he got down on one knee and pulled out a small box.
"Will..."
"Nico, I love you with all my heart, and I am so thankful that my garden caught your eye, because if it hadn't, I never would have met you. I love you, so, so much, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, will you do me the honor of being my husband?"
My eyes teared up as I shook my head yes. He swooped me up in a gigantic hug, then slipped the ring on my finger.
"I love you, Nico."
"I love you more."
