when she loved me

"Tris."

Hands still shaking, Tobias nudged his girlfriend awake. He tried not to disrupt the other girls that were scattered across the living room floor tucked under blankets in sleeping bags, fast asleep. Tris and Christina were sleeping on the pull-out couch and Tobias was leaning over the back of the couch. It was a few minutes past 3 in the morning, so Tris was sleeping soundly, face buried into her pillow. Tobias shook her shoulder a little harder, going as far as to move aside the short, blonde hair laying across her cheek. He rubbed his finger along the smooth skin and pulled back when Tris turned onto her back, blue eyes slowly blinking open. Her eyebrows furrowed when she saw Tobias bent over her.

"What's wrong?" Tris asked, reaching up to press a hand to his cheek. Because of the light radiating off from the hall, she could probably see how pale his skin was and how red his eyes were. She turned onto her stomach, rubbing at her face.

"Can we talk?" He glanced warily to Christina, then Marlene and Lynn. He didn't want them waking up and hear him talking. "Just in the other room."

When Tris had gotten up from the couch, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders, Tobias took ahold of her hand and brought her to sit in a different room away from the company. As soon as they sat down together, Tobias leaned into her and took a deep breath. "I had a nightmare and I haven't been able to go back to sleep." He said, waiting a second before lifting his head. His girlfriend's eyebrows were furrowed with concern. "I needed to--" Tobias laughed, "I needed to this." He gestured to their clasped hands in emphasis. Tris understood right away, knowing he couldn't ever find the right words to say that he needed comfort.

He needed to hold her hand, to have her near him.

"Do you need me to come sleep with you?"

It took Tobias a few minutes to shake his head. He looked away quickly before turning his gaze back to her. Even though he thought that it wasn't easy to see through the denial, Tris ended up standing, therefore dragging Tobias up after her. There was a soft smile on her lips as she walked toward the stairs.

Tobias trailed behind, following Tris up and down the hall, into his room. Finally, she dropped his hand to climb on the bed. Tobias laid down beside her, instantly calm when she was in her arms.

Opening the passenger's side door, Tris slumped into the seat with a shaky breath. Tobias looked at her with concern making his eyebrows furrow. As he pulled out of the parking space, Tris still didn't say a word and leaned her head on the window, pulling her lips inside her mouth.

"What's up?--"

As soon as they drove out of the school parking lot, Tris let out a cry that nearly broke Tobias's heart. Big tears rolled down her cheeks and eyes wide, Tobias looked over at her. He split his attention between the road and his girlfriend, who buried her face in her hands. Her shoulders were shaking and she pulled her legs up to her chest, curling in on herself.

Instead of waiting to get to their house, Tobias pulled over onto the side of the road. He reached over, laying a hand on Tris's back. Not forcing her to pick up her head and explain, Tobias leaned closer and kissed her temple, leaning his forehead against her head. It was minutes before Tris spoke, and her voice was mumbled.

"Will and Chris wouldn't talk to me all day. Christina ignored me all first period and Will didn't in third." Finally lifting her head, she dragged her hands down her face and circled her arms around her legs. Still crying, Tris looked straight out the front window. She blinked and two more tears fell down her cheeks. Tobias reached out, brushing his thumb under both of her eyes. It was enough to cause Tris to smile small and drop some of the tension from her shoulders. "I just went up to them a-after school ended and they said I've been off lately. That I'm not spending as much time with them as I should be."
