"So when ya gonna tell us what happened here, Doc?" Shane asked after the booyahs quieted down. "All the other doctors, that were supposed to be figuring out what happened, where are they?"

Rick stepped in. "We're celebrating, Shane. Don't need to do this now."

"Wait a second, this is why we're here," Shane continued. "You're the one who wanted to find all the answers."

The tension in the room was so thick you could cut it with the knife in your back pocket.

You sipped some more wine.

Rick gave Shane a look that uttered the words, "shut up".

Dr. Jenner cleared his throat. "When things got bad, a lot of people just left."

"Everybody just bolted?" you asked quietly.

Dr. Jenner looked at you with regret in his eyes. "No... some just opted out."

Your eyes widened.

"You didn't leave," Andrea pointed out. "Why?"

The pain in the doctor's eyes wasn't even something you had to look for. Everyone could see that this man had seen something dark. "I just kept working, hoping to do some good."

Glenn started speaking, obviously very drunk.

"Dude, you are such a buzzkill, man." he mumbled, shooting a look at Shane, who almost rolled his eyes.

The rest of the dinner was uncomfortably silent. After everyone was finished, the doctor led you down yet another hall. You wondered how big this place actually was.

"Most of the facility is powered down," he spoke. "Including housing. So you'll have to make do here. Couches are comfy, but there are cots in storage if you like. There's a rec room down the hall the kids might enjoy."

He turned to look at Carl and Sofia. "Just don't plug in the video games, okay? Or anything that draws power."

They nodded.

"Same applies," he said, pointing at the rest of you. "If you shower, go easy on the hot water."

Glenn smiled at you. "Hot water?"

"Hot water," you whispered in shock. You both giggled.

Everyone found either a different shower or waited in line.

You got to one of the empty ones and stepped in. You let the warm water run over you and you breathed in the steam like it was air. It was the first time in weeks you felt like everything was normal.

When you got out, you dressed in clean clothes that you hadn't worn since this whole thing started. You never had the time to change them.

You slipped on the blue t-shirt that was a size too big and some shorts. You braided your hair to the side and felt like a new person. You giggled like a little kid on Christmas.

You stepped into the hallway and ran into Glenn.

You looked at him and he was also clean and smiling.

"Oh my God, (Y/N)," he said. "I almost didn't recognize you."

You smiled even bigger. "I know. This is officially my favorite place in the world."

His eyes warmed up. "You look so... happy."

You felt a little dizzy after he smiled. "I feel happy."
