Miriam thought she loved nick. She found him enthralling and attractive and his worldly knowledge never failed to enlighten her.

On paper, they were the picture perfect couple.

Miriam's younger foster sister, Renee, had informed her on how much she idolised Miriam and Nicks relationship.

Miriam ignored the sharp tug in her stomach and the blood on her palms from digging her nails in too far.

Because between the lines of that paper, in minute print , the words leave, run away, don't come back were engraved a multitude of times.
It made Miriam dizzy.

Miriam always loved the darkness of midnight. She loved to sit on her windowsill and gaze at the stars.

It made her forget who she was.

It helped her forget about the constant riptide pulling her out to dangerous territory. The riptide that was always there, the riptide that lunged around her ankles and ripped her apart until she forgot what it felt like to breathe.

She was floating in a sea of her own debris, and all she could remember to do was look at the stars and imagine.

The riptide came in the form of an I love you.

Miriam knew that, because he'd said it again, he really meant it.

And so she was wrenched back out in to the disorientating waves, engulfed in what she's sure is love.

She realises that she doesn't need to breathe.

She can simply meander, just so long as the stars are above her and the honey words of i love you are ricocheting in her ears.
