Chapter 19: Its So Official Its Unofficial

These past few weeks have been pretty good. Me and my dad have been hanging out a lot more and as if it was possible, we got closer. We were growing apart because of his job and the promotion he had gotten a few years back, but now that he's adjusted to it and officially worked me into it all, its been great. My dad was actually working to start his own business which would be better for him, and better for us. And I'd actually work with him so we'd spend some time together. All in all, I was happy that we were back into our normal lives and not worrying about anything.

And that's how I liked it.

THE DAY OF HOMECOMING

I woke up in an extremely good mood. So much that when I woke up, I went downstairs and cooked me and my dad breakfast. Since it was homecoming and we had planned to get ready together, I decided to invite Anilah over as well. When she arrived, her hands were full of stuff. For one, she had a bag of snacks, her dress was in one hand, her shoes and make up bag in the other. I honestly couldn't help but laugh a little because she isn't the most tallest person in the world. In fact, you can't use tall or short for her. We're turning 18 in a couple months and she's only 5 feet tall.

"Haha very funny. But can you help me please? My arms are so tired." She whined.

Being the good friend I was, I contained my laughter and helped the poor girl. Once we got her settled, I yelled out to my dad.

"Dad!! Breakfast's ready! And Anilah's here!!"

"Okay honey! I'll be down in a second!"

"So, are you hungry?" I looked over to Anilah and asked.

"You asking me if I'm hungry is like asking a dog if it wants its ball. Of course I'm hungry!"

Laughing, I got out plates for all three of us and soon my dad joined us.

"Hey Anilah honey. How are you?"

"I'm doing well, how are you?"

"I'm doing great actually. Today I'm actually going to talk with some people at my job about moving my business forward."

"Dad! Thats great! Why didnt you tell me?" I exclaimed.

"I wanted it to be a surprise honey. Are you surprised?" He asked hopefully.

"Of course I am! I'm so happy for you. I know how bad you want this."

"Congratulations Mr.Williams. I'm happy for you."

"Thank you girls. Now if you excuse me I'm going to get ready to meet with them later."

"We actually are going to get our nails done for homecoming later."

"Oh yeah that's right! Well go ahead girls. I'll most likely be here when you get back."

"Okay see you later dad I love you." I said kissing him on the cheek.

"See you later Mr.Williams."

Once we got our nails done, me and Anilah stopped for some pizza before going home. We split it half and half where she got 5 cheese and I got pepporini and sausage. After we got our food, we headed home.

"Dad? You still here?"

"Yeah I was actually about to leave out now. Sorry I can't see you guys all dressed up." My dad said apologetically.

"Aw its alright dad. This is nothing. You still have prom." I smiled. "And besides I'll be sure to send you plenty of pictures."

"Thank you sweetie. I love you." My dad said kissing the top of my head. "I'll see you later."

"Okay bye dad. Be safe. I love you more."

When my dad left, me and Anilah saw it was still a little early. It was only 6:15 and the dance didnt start until 8:45. So we decided to eat and catch up since we haven't really spoken since she left that day I left my dad in jail. We talked about everything except what happened. But then I could tell she wanted to talk about it so I decided to break the ice.

"Listen Anilah, I know I haven't told you what happened that night so I think its time that I do. When I left you that night, my dad didn't call because he was running errands. It was the police department saying my dad had been arrested."

"Arrested? For what?"

"He had went to talk to someone that had been bothering me for a while and you know how my dad is about me."

"Who was the person? And how come I never knew?"

And with that, I explained everything that happened to Anilah. Including how Alexis died. After I was done, I was tearing up and so was Anilah. After I finished, it was time for us to get ready and that's when all feelings of sorrow were thrown out the window. I'd already accepted it all and was ready to move on.

Since Anilah was slightly better than me in makeup, she had done mine first and then as I was getting dressed, she did hers. When I walked out, her breath seemed to be taken away.

"You look beautiful." She said breathlessly.

"Really?" I said looking in the mirror.

"Yeah. You really do." She smiled. "Okay so I have a question."

"Ask."

"Are you officially ready to move on?"

"I'm so officially ready, its unofficial."

"I don't know whether to take that as a yes orrrr a no."

"Its a yes." I laughed. "Now go get ready!"

After 10 minutes, we were both ready to party and forget any worries.

Not that we had any.

When we arrived, it already seemed to be going in full swing. Everybody with their dates were rushing in and everybody honestly looked great. You could hear the music from outside and the song "DJ Kool- Let me clear my throat" was playing. When me and Anilah got inside, it was decorated beautifully. We both went to get a drink when we saw our friends and we ended engaged in a conversation. We went from talking, to dancing, to talking to dancing so much that by time homecoming was over, we were literally exhausted.

Arriving home, it was around 11 P.M. so Anilah decided to spend the night. As she was texting her mom that she would be staying over, I checked my phone and saw a text from my dad saying he was going out for drinks with some people from work and to not wait up for him.

Once me and Anilah got undressed we gathered up the snacks she brought earlier and we decided to watch movies on Netflix until we fell asleep. The funny thing is, we planned to watch movies. You know with an s. But we were so exhausted that we didn't get through one movie before knocking out.

1 A.M.

It was around 1 a.m. when I heard the TV being clicked off.

"Dad?" I said sleepily.

"Yeah honey its me. Sorry I didn't want to wake you."

"Thats okay. How did the meeting go?"

"Great. We're actually going to start working on my business next week."

"Dad! Thats great! I'm so proud of you!" I said hugging him.

"Thank you sweetie that means a lot. Now go off to bed, you sound like an ogre." He laughed.

"Haha very funny dad. Goodnight. I love you."

"I love you too kiddo. Sweet dreams."

I went off to bed and I was happy. Not only for me but for my dad. We finally were in a good place in our lives.

And just like my dad, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
