Chapter 29:

Sophie slowly rolled into wakefulness, immediately aware of someone's arms around her, holding her in a way that was warm and safe and comforting. Fitz, she thought. She cast her mind back to her dreams from the night before, recalling the awful nightmare about Keefe and the neverseen, her and Fitz's goodnatured flirting, the pillow fight in the Vacker's living room, and then falling back asleep as morning crested, exhausted. And after that, another dream. A bad one.

She had... broken, she was trapped in the shards of her mind, and at the same time she had watched everyone scramble to save her, somehow knowing she was a lost cause, before finally waking, at least within the dream, to not remember anyone. she recalled the helpless trapped feeling of watching the dream play out, knowing she was hurting her family and her friends.

She rolled closer to Fitz as Della came into the room. Blinking and still not used to vanishers, Sophie watched the tall beautiful elf glide through the room, floating from teenager to teenager, shaking them all gently, calling as she went,

"Sophie, Fitz, Bianca, Dex! Breakfast! Or should I say lunch? You slept half the day away!"

Her tone was playful, not mean, and compassionate. But something about her words made Sophie shiver. They were the exact same words Della had 'said' at the beginning of her awful nightmare.

But surely, surely, that didn't mean anything.

Right?
