Chapter 11:

The four members of the Collective (and Physic) and the four members of the Black Swan sat down at the long table. This time, the four younger elves were seated on one side, and the four older members sat across form them. Dex sat on one end, next to Sophie. On her other side sat Fitz, ad Biana was at the other end. Terigan sat across from Sophie, with Juline seated across from her son. Blur sat across from Fitz, Wraith sat next to Blur, across from Biana, and Physic paced restlessly behind the Collective. When Terigan motioned for her to sit down, she shook her head, and continued to pace, picking up speed.

"So?" Sophie said loudly. "What happened that we can't talk about in front of everyone else?"

"First of all, Sophie, please clam down. We needed to talk about your sister, and since we technically kidnapped her form the human world... well, it's better to talk privately," Granite reassured. "We want you to probe her mind."

"What?" Sophie shouted.

"Sophie, not you. Seeing you again may trigger memories she can't handle. We are suggesting that Fitz probes her. Then he can share anything he learns with you over your... connection, and you can boost him from a distance if needed."

"WHAT?" Sophie wasn't sure who shouted louder. Her, or Fitz. "There are so many things wrong with that? What if I can't do it without her? What if I trigger something anyway? What if we need Sophie to inflict to calm her down? What if..."

To Fitz's surprise, and Sophie's, Sophie was the one to cut him off. "You'll be fine. I'm sure you'll be careful, and you won't hurt her. I trust you with her life. But..." here she turned to glare at the Collective. (plus Physic) "Why, why, why can't I see my little sister? Please? It's been almost two years. After the probing, she'll need to be calmed down. I can do that. Please?"

Sophie wasn't asking, she was begging, and it hurt Fitz to see her brought so low by the organization that created her, that she was a part of. "Sophie should get to see her, or I'm not doing the probe."

"Mr. Vacker, this is not a negotiation!" barked Terigan.

"What Granite means," Juline interrupted, "is that we want you to be comfortable with this, but this plan is also designed to keep you all, including Amy, or Natalie, or whatever you feel better calling her,"

"Amy."

"Okay, Sophie. I was saying, this plan was designed to keep you all safe, and we can't risk your sanity, Sophie, over this. She's probably safe, and not going to shatter, she has a human mind. But the guilt of leaving her, of leaving her open to attack, even though you could have done nothing to prevent it, well, we can't lose our Moonlark, can we?"

Dex's mom finished with a small smile, and even though it was a comforting look, Sophie did not appear to be satisfied. "What if I sedated her?" Everyone jumped when Physic spoke, but she kept speaking, and finally stopped pacing, turning to face Sophie and the others. "I could knock her out, using a blend of human medicines, and Fitz could probe her. She would wake up and not know what had happened. Sophie could go in and see her sister without triggering any memories, and Amy wouldn't panic after having her mind probed."

"That would work on one condition. Sophie, you are not going into that room until I say so. NO arguments." Terigan had regained his calm, and when Sophie grudgingly nodded, he said. "Good. Let's go."

"Wait, right NOW?" Fitz nearly shouted, and even Sophie had to smile at how high his voice went on 'now?'

"Well, sure. The sooner you can probe her, the sooner we might have a clue to where the Neverseen has the rest of your human family."

"Hold up," Physic interjected. "It'll take me at least an hour to get the medications together to knock her out, maybe longer."

"Fine." Terigan's word was one long, drawn out sigh, and he said, "I'll be back in an hour and a half to pick you kids up. I'll hail you if I'm going to be any longer."

The group started to disperse slowly, Juline puling Dex aside for a few seconds to speak to him. Whatever she said, he nodded and hugged her. Pressing a kiss to her son's forehead, she walked away, stopping to hug Sophie. "I wonder how long it'll take the rest of the Collective to notice."

"What?"

"That you and Fitz are dating. It's so cute! I owe Della 40 lusters now."

Sophie had many, many, questions, but the most important was, "Why does everyone keep betting on my love life? My best friend, my mother, my aunt, Della, who else?"

Juline just laughed, gave Sophie another hug, and promising to come over to Havenfield later ("I need to talk to my sister," she said cryptically), she left.

Physic leapt away next, waving goodbye and shouting, "I'll see you both later!"

She was followed by Blur and Wraith, who also said their goodbyes. "You guys go prepare for the probing," Terigan told them. "I need to go talk to your parents about the dangerous thing their children have agreed to this time." When the four looked hurt, he added, "Oh come on. You know it was my idea. I just am already preparing myself for the lecture Grady is going to give me." Sophie smiled at this, knowing that to say her dad was extremely overprotective would be an understatement, and after giving Terigan a huge hug, she led her friends away.

"Where should we go? Fitz and I need to work on a few things, and I'm sure you have a makeover planned for Dex," Sophie told Biana.

"My room?"

"Works for us," Sophie and Fitz said at the same time, before blushing and looking away from each other.

Rolling her eyes at the couple, Biana grabbed the hand of the mildly alarmed Dex and dragged him away, shouting over her shoulder, "Just kiss already!"
