Dedicated to RedRefrigerator for encouraging comments and commenting and voting for my whole story. Thank you so much! People like you, who take the time to be nce to some stranger on the other side of the internet remind me why I like to write. I don't write for other people, I write for myself, and I will never hold you hostage asking for a certain amount of votes or comments. But I love it when other people enjoy something I create. So thank you, all of you, for reminding me that even though we are all insignifigant dots o the universe, we can still impact the great cosmos that rules us. (This is basically my very long way of saying thank you, I love and appreciate you all, and even though we are small, I hope my writing makes even a small differenc to at least one person. That is all I can ask for.) NOW ON TO THE CHAPTER!
Chapter 12:
Glaring at his sister's retreating back, Fitz leaned down and pulled Sophie into a hug.
"It'll be okay, Sophie. It'll be easy. It can't be any worse than some of the hearings we've done."
They both shuddered as memories of Fintan's horrific healing came back, before Sophie transmitted, "I just can't watch either of you get hurt."
"It'll be fine, Soph. I promise. Trust me."
As they both leaned in, Sophie on her tip-toes in her boyfriend's arms, Fitz, leaning over her slight form, something, or someone squealed loudly. "I knew you were going to kiss!!"
Cue tomato face from Sophie. She was pretty sure her face would explode if she blushed anymore. Fitz, on the other hand spun around towards the stairs and reached out an arm. He grabbed what seemed to be an invisible cylinder, which he twisted. Slowly, Biana shimmered into being. "How can you always tell? He can always tell where I am!" Biana complained, first to Fitz, then to her best friend.
"I'm just magic," Fitz smirked.
"No. I tracked her thoughts and told you. Plus, it's much easier to tell when you make a noise," Sophie corrected both of them. "Now, can we please figure out how you're going to probe my sister in less than an hour??"
Both Vacker siblings could hear the panic in Sophie's voice and Biana nodded approvingly when Fitz took her hand. "Let's go!" Biana chirped, as chipper as ever.
But through some sort of 6th sense, both Sophie and Fitz stayed a few steps behind Biana, and, when she turned down the glittering hallway that leads down to her room, Fitz leaned down and snuck a kiss. Sophie leaned into him and wrapped her arms around his neck.
A second, or a minute, or an hour, or maybe a century of light and bliss later, they both jumped at the loud clearing of a throat. "Hi. You were the ones who insisted on coming up with a plan if memory serves. Plus, Biana is trying to change my hair color!" Dex said, half irritated, half amused. Sophie flamed red, but Fitz just laughed, a low, beautiful sound that made Sophie's stomach flip and her heart contract.
Still laughing, Fitz took Sophie's hand and pulled her into Biana's room. Without speaking, they sat down on the edge of Biana's massive bed, Biana herself and Dex on the floor behind them, arguing about hair elixirs. Gently, Fitz took Sophie's hands and tugged her gloves off, laying them carefully on the bedside table.
"Ready?"
This time, Sophie really did jump when his deep voice filled her head, the crisp, almost-but-not-quite-British accent making her smile.
"Sorry for scaring you."
"It's fine. What do we need to work on? Your transmitting is fine," Sophie remarked dryly, rolling her eyes.
"How can I read the hidden memories without bringing them back?" Fitz asked and then, so quietly Sophie almost thought for a moment that she imagined it, "What if I can't do this?"
"You will be amazing. I know you will Just follow the paths that seem least defined, and be careful. Human minds are overwhelming. Nothing, absolutely nothing, you can learn is worth you getting lost or breaking over, okay?"
"Okay. Since when are you the comforting, calm one?"
"Fitz, shut up. I'm being helpful here," Sophie complained, flopping backwards on the bed so her feet dangled off the edge and her hair was spread around her head like a halo, having finally come loose of its ponytail.
Copying her, and taking one of her hands, Fitz transmitted, "I am being serious. Shouldn't you be panicking? Your boyfriend is about to go poke around in your sister's head."
"Well, when you put it that way."
Fitz laughed quietly, a soft sound meant only for Sophie, and played with a small section of her long hair.
"I trust you with my life, so I'm trusting you with hers. You'll be fine, Fitz. Trust me. If it's more than you can handle, we can call Terigan and do this together another day. But you'll be fine. I know it."
Still smiling, Fitz flipped onto his side so he was facing Sophie. "You're really confidant in me."
"Of course, idiot," Sophie said out loud, flipping onto her side so she, was looking at Fitz. She leaned over and kissed him gently on the lips, forgetting for a moment that Biana and Dex were still there. She remembered rather suddenly when Biana snuck up on the couple, invisible, and then jumped into visibility, landing right in front of them, scaring them both, for the second time in a few minutes.
"I really need to get my money from Edaline," Biana giggled.
Groaning, Sophie flung a pillow at her friend, wincing when it nailed Dex squarely in the face.
"That pillow curved in mid air! Sophie, telekinesis is cheating!" Dex whined.
"It wasn't me!" Suddenly, the pillow flipped on the floor, than soared into the air and smacked Fitz around the face. "Okay, that was me."
"Soph, what was that for?" Fitz didn't notice how Dex bristled when he shortened Sophie to Soph, but Sophie did.
"You attacked Dex with a pillow!"
"I did not!"
"Can we agree that this is dumb and immature?" Sophie was flustered, and annoyed, and really, really worried about her sister.
"Sure, but you still have to pay for smacking me with a pillow!" Fitz, being oblivious, still had not noticed how annoyed Sophie was getting.
"Biana! Where'd you go!" Dex's voice broke them both out of their flirting, fighting, bickering, and occasional death threats, as Biana reappeared with a pillow in each hand, giggling.
"Can we please focus? I'm really starting to freak out," Sophie's voice spilled into Fitz's mind, and quick peek into her emotional center showed him how worried she really was.
"Why didn't you tell me you were this worried?"
"I didn't want to freak you out."
"Sophie..."
"I'm sorry, I know..."
"You have to tell me stuff like this."
"I'm sorry? I didn't want to make you more nervous."
"Soph, I should apologize. I should've noticed how nervous you are."
"It'll be okay. Everything will work out fine. Right?" Even Sophie noticed that she sounded less than convinced herself.
"Yes. I promise."
"Okay."
This time, when Fitz wrapped his arms around Sophie, and kissed her forehead gently, Biana knew better than to interrupt.
