Chapter - 3

I got lost in thought and the next thing I remember hearing was Grandpa Makarov yelling “The Exam starts NOW!” I hadn’t heard any of the instruction but everyone else scattered so I did too. At least I wasn’t the only one who was a little behind, Lucy was left in the dust dumbfounded.

As we all fly out the doors of the Guild hall everyone takes off in different directions. I stop running after about a block and actually take a look at the request in my hand. ‘I never expected to get picked, and I definitely don’t think I can pass on my first try. I entered so that I could gain a little experience, that and because Wendy was talking about entering too.’ I caught myself before I got too distracted again. I focus on the request paper in my hand. It reads; ‘The Curse of Cloud Bay’ Oh great! Am I going to have to lift a curse? I don’t know that kind of magic. Why would Gramps give me this request? He said we would each have a fighting chase at passing, but I don’t have a clue how to lift a curse.

The kind of training I receive is strictly superficial stuff: combat, defense, and basic form. I don’t have any skills with the advanced casting, or in this case lifting, of a spell. I guess Gramps is trying to tell me that he doesn’t really expect me to pass. Oh well, come with low expectations and leave with little disappointment.

That of course doesn’t mean I am going to give up. I will keep trying and fighting to the bitter end! That’s what Natsu would do, so I should be doing no less. Natsu has always been like a big brother to me so I would hate to disappoint him by giving in so easily. 

I skim through the rest of the request and it basically is telling me where this Cloud Bay is and why they think it is cursed. According to this Cloud Bay used to be famous for its rare creature sighting, especially flying creatures. That is how it got its name from tourist always watching the skies. They believe they have been cursed because there is a petty feud going on between a merchant Guild of that city and a Magic Guild in a neighboring town. The Guild is one I have never heard of before, ‘Crimson Datress’. Sounds creepy. Well apparently this ‘Crimson Datress’ Guild hates this city for taking away the commerce from there town, they are also blaming them for a famine that has recently struck there. Suddenly a few months ago, Cloud Bay became like a waste land because none of the rare creatures that used to attract tourists come around anymore.

Long story short it is a petty fight, they are probably right to assume that ‘Crimson Datress’ is behind the mysterious disappearance of their money making creatures, but I’m not so sure this is a curse. Either way I need to get to Cloud Bay, which happens to be on the other side of the country. It will take almost two whole days to get there by train. At least that will leave me with three whole days to complete the task and get back home.

I head out right away and luckily I find a train that leaves today and is heading for Cloud Bay. I will be on this train for quite a while, lots of different things start running through my mind. I wonder what I will have to do to complete this quest. Who will I meet? Who was assigned to follow me? Which of the other examinees will pass? Things like that.

I know Natsu will pass, he is awesome! I mean he is a Dragon Slayer after all. I think that he and Gajeel and Wendy have the best chance because they are all Dragon Slayers. I am so jealous of them though. To be trained personally by a Dragon to use their powers, it would be unbelievably cool. I wonder if those Dragons really are out there somewhere. Igneel, Metalicana, Grandeena, and all the other Dragons that trained Dragon Slayers; I wonder where they are now? I guess that has nothing to do with me anyway so I should get focused.
