I don't remember the first time I met Niklaus. My parents told me I was only four summers when we met, since then we've been inseparable.

I was born in the same village as Niklaus and was raised around the Mikaelsons. My relationship with each Mikaelson is very different. Finn never really talked to me, he was kind of dull. Elijah was like an authority figure to me, always making sure I never got myself in trouble. Rebekah and I are sisters in everything but blood. Since we were both the only daughters in our families, we always stuck together. Kol was my partner in crime, we would always be causing mischief. Esther treated me like her daughter and somehow I managed to put a small smile on Mikael's face when I was around.

Then there was my wonderful Niklaus, when I wasn't with Rebekah or my brother, Viktor, I was with him. Playing games, running through the woods, or telling stories by the fire, I always enjoyed my time with him.

"Come catch me!" Niklaus and I were playing in the woods and I couldn't keep up. With my fiery red hair behind me, I ran after him."Niklaus wait!" Suddenly I heard his footsteps stop and we came into a beautiful clearing. There was a waterfall that made a small river with flowers everywhere surrounding the trees.

"It's beautiful..." We stood there in awe of the wonder we stumbled upon. "We can't tell anyone about it. This can be our secret spot." I told Niklaus.

"It's a deal." He said. "Now all we have to do is seal it." I looked at him confused.

"How?" I questioned him.

"With a kiss?" I nodded slowly at him. We both leaned in and pecked our lips together. I backed away and giggled my face as red as my hair. Niklaus had a big grin on his face.

"Vanessa! Supper is ready!" I heard my mother calling for me. I said goodbye to Niklaus and ran out of the forest.

What we didn't know was that a kiss shared by two children would lead to a much greater relationship...

By the time we were becoming young adults our friendship grew into something more. Sharing kisses and spending late nights together became more frequent and the entire village could tell there was a blossoming relationship forming between us. Everyone would say that we were to be wed since we are so close in age - Niklaus is one summer older than me- that I also thought it to be true.

One day I was arranging some flowers that I picked in our spot when Niklaus came and sat next to me. "Would you like a rose?" I asked him. He grabbed my hands and looked over them, searching for any harm.

"Did you prick your fingers?" He asked me with a sense of urgency in his voice. One thing I did know for sure was that Niklaus would never let any harm come my way.

"No, silly, I cut the thorns off with this." I told him bravely while raising a small knife.

"You do know that women aren't allowed to carry a blade." He said almost mockingly like he was scolding a child, snatching it away from me.

"Well my brother said that I should be able to defend myself," I said taking it back "So he gave me this." He let out a sigh, once I put my mind to something I never back down.

"Well thank you for the rose, but I should be the one giving you flowers." He said slyly taking the flower.

"And why is that?" I smirked at him.

"Because I would like to start courting you Vanessa Maer, with your permission of course." He asked formally.

I gasped at his question that I've been waiting so long to hear "But my father..."

"I already asked him for your hand." Niklaus confirmed.

"Yes."

Upon hearing my answer, Niklaus grabbed my waist and pulled me into a lustful, yet loving kiss. With our lips moving in sync as if they were made for each other, the kiss turned heated with our tongues meeting. He gently laid me against the grass tracing my jaw and neck with kisses. As I grabbed a hold of his shoulders I told him to stop before this led to something more, even though I wished we could make love on the grass beneath us.

After helping me up, we retreated from the woods with our hands intertwined to tell our siblings the news of our courtship. Everyone was excited, Rebekah more than others, to hear of our joining. That night our families held a dinner to get to know each other better.

"To Niklaus and Vanessa, may their relationship be long and fruitful!"

Everyone cheered at my brother's toast and continued talking. The house was filled with laughter, everyone was having a great time. Even Mikael couldn't keep a straight face for too long. I hoped that our families could always be like this but of course trouble had to come our way.

A few weeks after, I was in the heart of the village playing with Henrik. As we were chasing each other I spotted my older brother and convinced him to join our game.

"Wait for me!"

"Viktor you're too fast for us!"

"Come catch me little ones!"

I finally caught up to him and lightly pushed him saying, "I got you!" Somehow he lost his balance and stumbled to the ground hitting his head on a sharp boulder. I gasped and immediately ran over to him.

"Viktor."

"Viktor!"

"VIKTOR!"

No matter how many times I called him he wouldn't get up. Then I noticed the blood on the side of his head that splattered onto the rock. I think I just killed my brother.

"Henrik! Get my parents now!"

He ran off to my house while I cradled my brother in my arms. I kept telling him sorry over and over again hoping that he would hear me and wake up. Niklaus rushed over to my side as a crowd started to form around us. "What happened love?" He looked at me but all I could do was quietly sob.

"Vanessa, what happened?!" My parents came rushing through the crowd. Once my mother's eyes laid on Viktor she started crying.

"How did this happen?" My father's tone was so dark, I have never heard him speak to me like this.

"W-We were playing a-and I pushed him then he f-fell and his head hit t-the rock..." I managed to choke out in between sobs,"I'm so sorry." Niklaus immediately started to comfort me, murmuring things like everything is going to be okay, it's not your fault, and that it was an accident. I actually started to believe him until my father picked up Viktor's dead body and glared at me so harshly that if looks could kill I'd be six feet under. I then continued crying onto Niklaus' shoulder while he tried his best to be there for me. Then something clicked in my mind. I just activated my werewolf curse.

The hard times were barely over for us in fact, they had just begun...

I obviously have no rights over TVD or it's characters. I do own Vanessa and Viktor Maer along with their parents and backstory so don't steal. Thanks for reading!

Maer is pronounced May-er.
