Chapter 4

(Eva)

2 weeks later

It had been two weeks since the incident at the diner and Eva couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Every moment she could feel the burning gaze of someone’s eyes on her back but no matter how hard she looked Eva couldn’t find the source. Yet instead of fearing the gaze Eva felt safer. She felt like someone was protecting her from afar and it was a blessing to her.

It was the second Thursday after the event when Eva suddenly felt like she was alone. She no longer felt the protective gaze on her that morning and the fear was slowly starting to come back. Eva felt like she was exposed to all dangers and it was a feeling she had gotten used to over the months. Whatever was going on Eva had a feeling that she was no longer under the watchful gaze of her guardian, whoever they were, and she didn’t like it.

“This morning I want the distance runners to go for a long run. Everyone else, you have three 400’s and two 800’s, two sets.” The track coach ordered as the track and cross country team met outside the locker rooms. Eva looked around nervously, staying close to her best friend of almost seven years: Leila.

Leila was in cross country and somehow had managed to convince Eva to switch from track to cross country and join her. Leila was good with words and her silver tongue gave her an advantage with almost everyone, boys included. Her looks were just as good as her tongue. She had curly blonde hair that was always tied up in a ponytail and her bright eyes always caught the attention of everyone around her. Leila’s nicely toned body and well-rounded curves gave her the attention of almost every boy she came in contact with. Yet there was a problem, Leila didn’t want their attention. She had set her sights on someone, a person she had yet to tell Eva the name of, and wasn’t willing to forget them anytime soon.

“Do I have to? I don’t think this is such a good idea.” Eva murmured as they walked out of the athletics building and into the warm morning. Cross country season was supposed to have ended months ago but the coach believed in practicing year round, something Eva wasn’t happy about. She hated having to wake up so early just to run around and get sweaty; it wasn’t something she looked forward to every morning.

“Yes. I’m not going to hide in the woods today. I didn’t get to run yesterday and I’m dying to blow off some energy.” Leila said stubbornly, starting to jog across the soccer fields and into the woods. Eva sighed, tying her hair back before taking off after her. Catching up with ease Eva kept pace with her friend, hearing the sounds of the track coaches dying behind them as they got deeper and deeper into the woods.
