A tall young man led me towards the building, two other Romans in front of us. Suddenly he stopped and looked around him, when he seemed satisfied by what he saw he turned to me. First he pushed something in my hands. I looked at it confusedly. It was a key. ‘Take it.’ He told me. ‘Run. Free your friends. The others are on the other side in that building over there. Go! Don’t look back.’
‘Why?’ I asked him and he smiled.
‘Son of Apollo. I’m not going to let my half-sister marry that loser now am I.’
‘Won’t you get in trouble?’
‘An awful lot and even more if you don’t go right now!’ I hugged him quickly before taking off.
I ran back to the building and unlocked the door. ‘Get up!’ I shouted. ‘Hurry!’ They got up confusedly.
‘What’s going on?’ most muttered.
‘We’re running! MOVE!’ on a second they understood and followed me out towards the building my Roman half-brother told me the others were. Once again I threw the door open.
What I saw shocked me. They were all bloody and looked terrible. They had obviously been beaten up loads of times. They were underfed and pale. I didn’t take a second longer to stare at them and starting helping up. The others quickly followed my example.
‘Now what?’
I thought about it for a second. ‘Now we get the hell out of here.’ We ran towards the camp entrance when I suddenly remembered our weapons, or more the lack of them. I cursed. It was too late to get them now! Suddenly a sharp pain shot through my back and I fell. I fell on my back and my hand closed around an arrow. That’s ironic, a daughter of Apollo killed by an arrow. I yanked it out, biting my lip to stop me from screaming. I pressed my hand against my back, desperately trying to stop the bleeding. I stood up, ignoring the searing pain and the tears threatening to drop from my eyes, and snapped the arrow neatly in two before throwing it on the ground.
I looked up to meet the eyes of the archer. It was a pair of bright blue eyes and I shook my head. Apparently not all of the children of Apollo in this camp were as nice as the one who’d saved me. He seemed shocked when he looked back in my eyes though. As if he hadn’t expected he’d recognize them. Of course he did. They were the same. As though he suddenly came to the conclusion that what he was doing, shooting arrows at family, he dropped his bow and arrows and ran like hell was after him. I stooped to pick them up before taking off in the opposite direction, the direction my friends had went in. I felt light-headed, probably because of all the blood I’d lost, but kept running, determined to at least reach my friends before passing out. We ran for what felt like hours before we were finally far away from the Roman territory. We slowed down but didn’t stop moving until the sun went down. As soon as we stopped, I let myself fall down on the grass and closed my eyes.
I heard someone gasp. ‘Guys! She’s been hit! She’s lost a lot of blood!’
‘Can’t you heal her?!’
‘We have no supplies!’
‘Call camp!’ They shouldn’t call, it was to dangerous.
I lost consciousness less than a second after that.
------
A bright light shone down on my face and I opened my eyes slowly. It was the sun. The beams on my face calmed me down. Someone squeezed my right hand and I looked to my right to see Gabriel, sitting on a chair next to my bed. I looked around the room. I saw a lot of beds, most empty but some filled with people from around my age. I was in the infirmary.
‘I’m sorry I yelled at you.’ I whispered, but he’d heard me because he squeezed my hand again and told me not to worry about it.
‘I yelled at you too, we were both just irritated.’ A small smile appeared on my face and I sat up, gripping the bed tightly. He leaned closer and I felt his breath on my lips. Someone coughed and I turned to see Steven and Adam leaning against the doorpost with an amused smile on their face. Steven was the one who’d coughed. Jerks. Just to annoy them and because I really wanted to, I ignored their presence and turned back to Gabriel before kissing him on his lips. He smiled in the kiss and pulled me closer.
‘Oh gods, we don’t want to see it!’
‘Mentally scarred, forever.’
I let out a small laugh before wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him again.
