The New Commander

I was called up to bridge again, an hour before we entered Earth's atmosphere. My best friend 44309 said that they need my assistance because the radar was faulty. Again. I told her on the way up to the bridge that 'the ship is falling apart. I need new wires...' She just looked at me and smiled,"I know. I am not the one that you need to tell". I just rolled my black eyes at her, "is General in a good mood today?" I asked her, folding my arms as my cream colours claws followed on.
At the bridge the General was waiting, tapping his claws on the control panel. His chair squeaked and groaned as the poor Captain's seat was pushed to it limits. I stood at the entrance to the bridge, I was totally frozen with terror, facing the General. I saluted my General, "Sir, 42509 responding to your wale" I announced, my legs were shaking and my voice varied from high to low. 44309 put her wing to her jaw and tried very hard to to laugh. The General turned around in his buckling seat, with a strange smile on his face. It was almost as if he saw me... Like he actually cared about me, in a friendly sort of way. This made me extremely suspicious. The General stood up and welcomed me with open arms, hugging me... He was hugging me?!... Not strangling or trying to dismantle me... But holding me gently. I scowled with confusion. The General seemed to smile at he as if I was his new born son, "my boy... I just had a thought. I have noticed you have been working around the clock. I feel like I owe you a promotion... How does Commander sound?" Asked my General, baring his needle like fangs. I could not believe what I was hearing, this was so random. All I could think was, 'why me of all creatures?" But I dared not ask. I did consider saying no but my mouth said yes when my brain said no. "Yes sir, I would be delighted" I said with a brave voice. The General bowed his head down, "you will now pick your name" said the General, smiling.
