CHAPTER 10
First party of the break was at Terrick Harrow's house. He was kind of a nobody stoner, but he had much more well known friends who had posted the memo. It was more their party than his, he just rented out the venue to them for grams.
My mother didn't exactly agree to this party when I had brought it up to her originally, so Ivan's parents were our ride. Granted, Ivan's parents thought I had permission to go, and they were pretty adamant about driving us. I guess Ivan doesn't go to many parties and they were worried he didn't have many friends. It seemed like something my mom would pull, since she spent her high school days as a 'very popular' homie hopper and I stuck to the same four friends.
The party had just begun by the time we had arrived. Darren was out front in his hockey jacket with a red cup in his hand. Once he saw me, he waved bye to his friends and walked over.
"Hey babe," he greeted.
I had no time to greet back before he kissed me hello. I smiled into the kiss because he'd never kissed me like this before.
"Let's go in." He bit his lip to tried and hide his smirk, but I was already smirking back.
We parted the crowd like the red sea whenever we walked by. It's been like this for a couple of weeks now. People stared, and we stared back. Sometimes I felt like he held my hand like a lost child, like a pity case, but in our private moments, nothing else seemed to matter for us. We could just be ourselves, and be with each other.
"A few of us are in the back by a bonfire, it's in Terry's shed, he has a whole thing set up," he whispered in my ear.
Even in Canada, there was no snow during December. Though the weather was in the negatives, the air stayed dry, and the ground did too.
"Let me ask Ivan if he wants to," I clocked my head to find Ivan, but was surprised when he was still giddy in his spot right next to me. "Hey, there. You in?"
He nodded silently with a small smile. I wrapped my arm around his and he followed us out of the pulsing crowd.
Outside was quiet. Two kids were lighting up on a patio couch, hugging pillows to their chest to keep warm as the smoke inflamed their lungs.
The shed was square with two oak doors and solid roofing. If it weren't for the plywood walls, it was big enough to look like half of a house.
The inside was even better, with a high ceiling, bunked shelving stacked with pillows and blankets, a bluetooth sound system, and ventilation in the ceiling for a fire pit in the middle. A few people were already sat around the fire, the crowd including Will and his girlfriend, the Kerry sisters (AKA Twin Greaseballs), a few stoners I recognized but never paid attention to, a few Wanna-Be preps, Terrick Harrow in the flesh, and Will' best-friend Rowan.
The Kerry's gave me a nasty look, residue of earlier twitter beef over their post about 'white girls do it better', and I responded by placing a kiss on Darren's cheek. They rolled their eyes and tried to laugh it off, but their discomfort was still obvious.
Around the fire a bottle was passed, people laughed, kissed, coughed... These were the glory days, or so they told us. To me, we all just looked lost, forcing ourselves to rebel but all conforming to the same strategy.
I took a seat on a short couch in the back of the shed. Darren followed and sat next to me, slinging an arm over my shoulder and letting his fingers hover over my boob. Ivan took an uncomfortable seat next to Will's girlfriend on a long bunk. Will looked at him with a small smile that Ivan returned. I didn't know they knew each other, or at least that's how it seemed through the interaction.
