CHAPTER 15
That night a conversation occurred.
It was around 11pm when I arrived home, and shortly after my nightly shower, I received a call.
Me: Hello?
Argus: Hey there. Did you just get back?
It's him. The silky Spanish accent, the deep pitch... It's him. HE CALLED ME.
Me: Sorry, I don't talk to strangers. Who is this?
Argus: It's Arie, from today at—
Me: Yes, yes, I know! I recognize your voice.
Argus: Good, cause I may feel a little less special if you give your number to a handful of guys each night.
Me: Gasp! What do you take me as? An independent woman who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to play the whole field?
Argus: You know what I mean!
Me: I know I know, I'm just playing with you. But for the record, me giving my number out is rare, so feel special.
Argus: Never doubted my specialness since the moment I met you.
Me: Good, you never should.
Argus: So you're probably heading to bed about now?
Me: Not yet, I'm usually a night owl. It's only a Saturday, I'll be up until at least 2.
Argus: Good, I wannah know more about you.
He wants to know me.
Me: Well, what do you want to know?
Argus: What's your favorite song right now?
That's a loaded question. My most played is Under The Table by BANKS for obvious reasons. But every morning I listen to Whoa Is Me by Down With Webster; it's the only song I've never gotten tired of. The song that moved me the most was Small Bump by Ed Sheeran, since I can't remember ever crying that much over lyrics. Then there was Hang With Me by Robyn... Actually, anything by her is my favorite because of how relatable it is to never be first choice.
Me: Easy, Doo Wop by Lauryn Hill.
Argus: Explain.
Me: It's one of the only songs I can imagine will teach truth for decades to come. She writes so intelligently, and everyone can relate to it. Though I know I don't always practice what she preaches, because I aspire to be like her, I keep in mind what I need to focus on. Like the great Ms. Hill says, How you gonna win when you ain't right within?
Argus: Guys, you know you better watch out! Some girls, some girls are only about!
Me: That thing, that thing, that thiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!
Argus: Wow, you're so good.
Me: And you're surprisingly terrible!
Argus: Hey, hey, I'm trying! It's difficult when you're up against the obvious offspring of Lauryn, herself!
Me: I wouldn't say that, maybe her second cousin, though?
Argus laughed his beautiful, golden bell laugh.
Argus: Singing isn't really my thing, I'll leave it to you.
Me: What is your thing, then?
Argus: I'm a boxer. I used to compete back in Spain, and I want to here. I just need to settle in first.
