CHAPTER 24
"Here, you'll like this one," I said as I played another song from my Spotify playlist.
It's that heat, it's that heat, that we can't seem to reach... The song began.
"Oh, shit! This is... uhm... dank," Arie said, trying to find the words.
I laughed at his choice of diction. "You did NOT just say the word dank to describe Unbuttoned?"
"Sorry! I can't explain it. Was is this?"
"They call it 'yaya', don't know what that even means. But I call it neo soul. More abstract than R&B but too electronic to be soul."
"Okay. Neo sool. I'll add it to my dictionary," he said, attempting to pronounce the new words.
"No, soul! Like sole, of a shoe!"
"Soul."
"Soul," I repeated.
"Got it," he laughed his glorious laugh. I shook my head at him. He laughs so confidently, even at things that seem silly. I envied him.
I can still smell you on my body, I can still smell you on my clothes... This song reminded me of the color pink, and bubbles, and mornings that are so bright that the sky is almost white instead of blue. And, it reminded me of him.
"Hey, Virvanna," I heard muttered in the distance. The sound was muffled by my beating ear drums. I opened my eyes to see that Arie was still lost in the music, so it confirmed someone was looking to get my attention. From the side, I could sense an approaching figure. As I took out my ear bud, I looked to the side and saw Leo, the douchiest of all the Fighter Jets approaching me.
"Hey, Leo?" I was confused as to why he was talking to me outside of class.
"How are you?" he had a smug look on his face that I didn't like.
"I'm fine, I guess..."
Before I could put my ear bud back in and ignore him, he spoke again. "Aren't you gonna ask how I'm doing?"
"How are you, Leo?" I rolled my eyes at how childish he was.
"I'm good," he smiled giddily.
By this point, Arie had his ear buds out too, and was looking at Leo in suspicion.
"Hey there," Arie stuck out his hand. "Argus, new kid."
"Leo, Fighter Jet, probable genius, Virvanna's future husband."
"Leo, get out," I commanded.
He rolled his eyes and began to trudge away slowly.
"What was that about? Do you have a boyfriend, Virvanna?" Arie looked genuinely hurt.
"No! No way, that kid hates me on the inside. Likes to piss me off."
"He doesn't look at you like he hates you." We both plugged back into the music and continued listening. Baby won't you jump down, baby won't you jump down!
I looked back at Leo, and with slight delay, he looked back at me and smiled slightly.
"This year is so backwards," I muttered to myself.
Midterm. Block. Party.
I know. Nothing could be dumber. Having a party right before midterm tests? While projects are due the next week? Not the best.
This time around, there was no way I could get my parents to let me go. So I had to sneak out. Big mistake.
Dear Diary, here is the worse night of my life.
