CHAPTER 5
Today is the day. It's Monday. It's time to face my best friends, and find out if they hate me or not for having relations with our shared enemy.
I walked through the corridors with a poker face and my head held high. The first step of the day was to intake people's reactions. So far so good, I thought. Not many more people were staring than the usual amount. As I walked further into the school, the conversations seemed more distant. It was like I was walking with a fog of silence around me, and anyone under the cloud was bound to be voiceless. So, they were definitely talking.
Girls, Pops to be exact, were not shy with their gazes. I tried my best to ignore them, but one of them was far too loud and saying my name, and I turned to them shamelessly as I walked up the stairs. They shushed themselves quickly, but continued to look my way. I smirked and continued up the stairs regardless. Now was not the time for confrontational Virvanna to come out.
Outside of my locker was someone I didn't expect to see early in the day.
"Darren," I greeted with some confusion in my voice.
"Hey," he smiled lightly at me. I returned the gesture with politeness. "So people think we're dating now."
"Is that what they're saying?" I said, unlocking my locker and shoving my backpack inside. It slipped off the hook and fell to the floor of the locker, thudding against the metal. I sighed in frustration.
"Yeah, that's the rumour." Darren watched as I bent over to pick up my backpack. I could hear his breathing deepen from 3 feet away. Sometimes, he was too easy to impress and for a second I let myself compare to Hope...
"Well, it doesn't have to be a rumour," Darren suggested as he stepped closer to me.
I backed into the locker next to mine and Darren's hands rested at the sides of my body. Was the room getting smaller or...
"What are you saying?" I stuttered out.
"Be my girlfriend. I'll take you out tonight."
And before I realized it, I had said the unthinkable: "S-sure."
The once quiet halls filled with chatter, but my eyes were hooked on the hazel portals in front of me. Could everyone hear? Suddenly I didn't want to be the centre of attention like usual.
Darren laid a soft and careful kiss on my lips before walking away from the scene and towards his first class. I stayed dumbfounded, not at him, but at myself.
Once I finally collected my thoughts, I gathered my dropped binder from the ground and headed in the opposite direction.
The second I stepped into my math class I was bombarded by silence. Way to make me feel welcomed. I tried not to let the eyes boring into my head shuffle the pattern of my strut. If I kept my eyes focused on my goal point, they would eventually continue their conversations. By the time I was in my seat, chatter was slowly growing.
Two girls, jock-Pops, approached me. They too-confidently sat in the two seats in front of me and stared until they had my attention. I looked up from my desk and gave them an annoyed look that they threw over their shoulders.
"Are you dating Darren?" they asked.
"Way to get to the point," I began. "I don't know, maybe."
"It's a yes or no question." They stared at me blank face.
"Yes, I am dating Darren. We've been hanging out for a while, and now it's official."
The two girls widened their eyes at me, and then nodded to cover up the shock. "Oh," the mumbled. Their voices cried out "what a weird choice, Darren". It also cried jealousy.
