Wicked Love

Chapter 5

Inside Mal and Evie's dorm, Evie and Doug are studying Chemistry together.

"What's silver nitrate?" Doug asked Evie, testing her.

"Compound for photography," answered Evie.

"Sodium polyacrylate?" asked Doug.

"Commonly used for dish washing and laundry," answered Evie. "Carlos taught me that."

"You're really good at this," said Doug.

"Well, I have you to thank for that," said Evie, smiling at him.

Doug smiled nervously. "But you've always been..."

Doug was interrupted when Mal came bursting into the room. She immediately shuts the door behind her. She leans back against the wall as she tries to breathe.

"M, what happened?" asked Evie.

"Those vultures called reporters ambushed me outside," answered Mal, sounding irritated.

Evie walks towards the window and looks outside. A crowd of people with microphones, cameras, notepads, and voice recorders were outside Auradon Prep. Fairy God Mother was currently at the scene, trying to tell them go away.

"Let me guess," said Evie.

"Carlos," said Mal, confirming her friend's guess.

"Well, cheating on the King of Auradon is a pretty big deal," commented Doug.

Mal glares at Doug, and so does Evie, causing the son of Dopey to shrink back on his chair, regretting ever saying anything.

"Doug, I think we should continue this another time," said Evie.

Doug packs up his things and leaves the dorm, avoiding eye contact with Mal, who was still glaring at him.

"I'm guessing Ben hasn't reported about the pretend break-up," guessed Evie.

"Like Lonnie said, all of Auradon is going nuts over this and not in the good way," said Mal.

Mal grunts with furiousness as she walks towards bed and crashes her face on her pillow. Someone knocks on the door and Evie answers it. It was Jay.

"Hey," greeted Jay. "Saw Mal running like she just saw her mother turn into a dragon. Went outside and saw a bunch of reporters. It's about Mal cheating on Ben, isn't it?"

"Afraid so," replied Evie.

"And how's our fearless leader handling this?" asked Jay.

Evie lets Jay in, allowing him to see Mal's current state.

"Hey, Jay," greeted Mal, raising her hand but keeping her face glued to her pillow.

"Okay, I have a crazy idea," said Jay. "You said that you need to be in love with Carlos to break the love spell, right? So, why not make a love spell for yourself?"

"That's... not a bad idea, actually," said Evie. "M, what do you..."

"No," said Mal.

"But it could work," said Evie. "You give him a kiss filled with love, he kisses you back and poof, he's back to normal."

Mal raises her head from her pillow and looks at Evie. "I am not going to spell myself. I'd prefer to keep my brain intact."

"Then how do you expect Carlos' puppy love for you to die without a kiss of love?" asked Jay.

"I'll handle it," said Mal. "Trust me. Have I ever failed?"

"Well..." Evie and Jay said at the same time.

"Don't answer that," interrupted Mal.

Later that day, Mal went out to look for Carlos. She found him at the Tourney field, playing fetch with Dude. Seeing him happy to have a loyal friend like Dude in his life makes her happy as well.

"Hey, Carlos," greeted Mal.

"Oh, hey, Mal," greeted Carlos.

Carlos walks towards Maleficent's daughter and gives her a kiss on the lips. Mal quickly removes her lips from his. Carlos looked bothered by this.

"Are you always gonna push me away?" asked Carlos. "Do you not like it?"

"No. No. It's okay, really," said Mal nervously. "It's just... I never had my first kiss with Ben, so the feeling is still pretty weird."

"So, what kind I do for you?" asked Carlos.

"I just needed to see you," said Mal honestly. "A bunch of vultures attacked me because they saw that picture of you and me that Audrey posted."

"By vultures, you mean reporters?" guessed Carlos. "Don't mind them. What we have is beautiful and I don't care if the whole world is not okay with it."

Mal smiles for a second before frowning again.

"Well, well, well."

Mal and Carlos turn around to see Chad, along with a couple Fighting Knights, dressed in their Tourney uniforms. Chad was definitely not happy to see both of them.

"The girl who cheated on my friend," said Chad, looking at Mal with contempt.

Carlos walks towards Chad and looks at him in the eye. "Hey! Don't talk to my girl like that."

"Or what?" asked Chad.

To the surprise of Mal and the Tourney players, Carlos punches Chad in the face.

"Or that," said Carlos.

Chad was held back by his two teammates, who were trying to keep him from retaliating, while Mal pulls Carlos away from the pompous prince.

"We have a Tourney game in five hours, De Vil," said Chad. "You're lucky a bruised cheek is all I have to worry about."

Chad walks away with his teammates to start practicing.

"I can't believe you just did that," said Mal, still surprised.

"I've been wanting to do that to him since Family Day," said Carlos.

"Really?" asked Mal, raising an eyebrow.

"No one yells at my girl and gets away with it," said Carlos.

"If I recall correctly, you did nothing after Chad lashed out on me, Evie, and Jay," said Mal. "What made you so brave all of a sudden?"

"Love," answered Carlos. "It makes us brave. Brave enough to stand up for someone you really care about."

Even though she knows it's the love spell, Mal can't help but smile. Somewhere deep inside her, she knows that Carlos was being truthful about wanting to punch Chad because of Family Day.

Carlos calls for Dude and picks him up. "C'mon, let's go somewhere where there aren't any jerk princes to mess with us."

Mal and Carlos walk away from the Tourney field together.
