Evie was in her dorm, updating her InstaRoyal account. The sound of the door opening made her look away from her phone. She sees her roommate, Mal, feeling a little slow and not at all happy. She closed the door and slowly turns around.
"Something wrong, M?" asked Evie.
"Nothing," lied Mal.
Evie raised an eyebrow. "Doesn't look like nothing."
Evie gets up and approaches her friend. She grabs hold of both her hands, trying to get her to open up.
"So, uh, how was the date?" asked Evie.
"Didn't you see the pictures?" asked Mal.
"I did," said Evie. "But I wanna hear it from you."
"Well, after we went bowling, he took me to the Shining Bridge," said Mal.
"Wow," Evie reacted.
"He made this little something from chemistry class. It made the water pop into the air like geysers," continued Mal.
"Wow," replied Evie again.
"Then he sang to me," said Mal.
Evie gasped.
"He has a great voice, in case you're wondering," said Mal. "Also, we slow-danced while he sang."
"Oh, that is so romantic," said Evie, smiling. "So, what about the plan to make him not in love with you anymore?"
"I... I couldn't do anything tonight," said Mal. "After he sang, he told me that... he loved me."
"That's just the cookie talking," said Evie.
"I don't think that it is," said Mal, hanging her head. "Something tells me that... that maybe he's felt this way all this time."
Evie chuckled. "Are you seriously thinking that Carlos is actually in love with you."
"Before he ate the cookie, he told me the reason why he didn't want to make a move on Jane. He said there was someone else," said Mal. "He described her as a hothead who loves art. I think you and I both know there's only one person in this school who fits that description."
Evie's eyes widened with surprise.
"So, you're saying that the love spell didn't make him fall in love with you. It just amplified his love for you," guessed Evie.
"It looks like it," said Mal.
"Mal, are you... falling in love with him?" asked Evie.
"What? No, of course not," said Mal. "I just... trying to end things with him just got a whole lot more complicated. He loves me, E, for real. I don't know what to do anymore."
"You don't want to spend the rest of your life with him, do you?" asked Evie.
"As his lover, definitely not," said Mal.
"Then you have to snap out of it and focus on your plan," said Evie.
"I know," said Mal.
- ROTTEN TO THE CORE -
Jay was already sleeping in his bed, until he heard someone come in. It was his roommate, Carlos, looking love-struck.
"You look happy," said Jay.
"I really am," said Carlos, still looking dazed with love.
"Did Mal enjoy herself?" asked Jay.
"She did," said Carlos. "I can tell she loved every minute."
"Really?" questioned Jay.
"You've seen the pictures at the bowling alley, right?" asked Carlos. "She was a bit uncomfortable at the start, yes, but in the end, she had a good time.
"Did you two, uh, share a goodnight kiss?" asked Jay.
"No, but we did kiss," said Carlos. "Well, I kissed her. She just... didn't kiss back."
"Uh oh," mocked Jay.
"Don't worry," said Carlos. "She's just not used to the whole kissing thing yet. I'm sure she'll turn around someday."
"Whatever you say," said Jay.
Jay turns his head away from Carlos. Unlike the girls, Jay wasn't worried. He thought that Carlos only assumed Mal had a good time because he was too in love with her to notice her facade. The smile on his face shows how good he still feels good about the situation.
He had no idea what was really going on, though.
