-Simone POV-
"You're in a good mood." My mom remarked as I whistled, getting a bottle of water out of the fridge.
I shrugged. "Our family's going to be here soon, might as well enjoy my space while I can."
"Thanks for clearing up your room, I appreciate you kid." My mom ruffled my hair.
I shook it out. "Happy to help. But I do have sucking news, Jason won't be at the barbecue."
"How come?" Mom asked. "Everything good between you two?"
I nodded, swallowing the sinking feeling in my throat. "He just had family commitments of his own." I couldn't tell my mom that he was blowing off family time for a game.
"Good." Mom smiled, relieved. "I was worried."
"No need." I smiled back.
Just then, my phone rang. I noticed Savana was calling. I answered, my mom making her way to the fridge. We do a lot of eating in this house.
"Simone! Simoneee." She gushed immediately.
"Hey Sav, what's up?" I couldn't help but smile.
"Matthew and his friends are hosting a little last minute bonfire by the lake tonight. You down for it?" She asked eagerly. "Ask your mom."
"No way?" I perked up. I really wanted to get out tonight - not because our family would be here tomorrow but to get some air.
Beside it's Friday night.
I turned to my mom. She raised her brows.
"Espinosa is hosting a bonfire, can I please go?" I bared all teeth.
"Geez. Haven't heard of the kid in like forever!" Mom nodded. "12 o'clock curfew babe."
I smiled. "Moms onboard, except I've got curfew."
"Yassss." I could hear Savana tapped her hands on something excitedly. "I told Matt we're picking you up at 6:30 so get ready."
"See you then!" I ended the call and checked to see how much time I had before then.
"An hour to kill." Mom smiled. "Is Jason going too? He knows about curfew."
I didn't even think of that.
"Jason isn't really their cup of tea, or rather they're from different cliques." I explained with a laugh. "He's busy anyways, like I said."
I glanced at my mom, Jason had texted to hang out tonight but I hadn't replied yet. I needed a break and I'm sure he would understand. Maybe we needed this weekend away from each other.
"Okay sweetie, I'll be out back reading if you need me." Mom blew me a kiss then exited through the back door.
I exhaled. For some reason, I felt really light and free knowing I'd be going out with my friends. Or well Savana, I couldn't remember the last time I actually hung out with Matthew or one of his friends.
I dashed upstairs to take a quick shower and wash away the feeling of school.
I didn't want to overdue it tonight so I decided that my best outfit option was jeans, a simple sweater and kicks. It was chilly at night anyways.
