The next morning, Johnson almost tackled me. "Dude ok, where were you last night?"
"Why?" I chuckled.
Johnson's brows rose. "Wh - why?"
"Yeah? Why?"
"Man." Johnson laughed. "My parents were out late, we agreed to have a few friends over. Some girls."
I snorted. "Oh shit. I forgot man!"
"Oh you forgot? I'm gonna forget that you're my bestfriend and punch you in the face." Johnson mocked my voice. I gotta say, he did a great impression.
I laughed and swung my arm around his shoulder. "It wasn't all in vain though because I was with Simone."
Johnson stopped so fast, I almost tripped. "Say what?"
"I caught her jogging and offered to give her a ride and we ended up driving out and talking and shit like that."
"What, Jason's Simone?" Johnson cleared his throat.
I stiffened. "Simone, kindergarten Simone. Our friend."
Johnson caught the edge in my voice which I didn't mean at all. I don't know what I meant honestly. But he seemed to just get it.
"Geez, man. I didn't know it was like that." Johnson ran a hang through his hair.
I shrugged. "It's nothing actually. It's just that...fuck. Johnson's what the hell am I gonna do?"
He exhaled. "Have you guys done anything?"
"No, nothing like that." I chucked. It sounded so weird the way he had said it, as if we were in 9th grade. "I mean I didn't even know if she feels something but I do...I think I do."
"So tell her?" Johnson nudged me. "I know you're always open about stuff like that."
"Are you insane? I can't do that, not when she's so fragile with her family issues and - "
"Jason is her boyfriend."
I made a face. "I don't give a shit about that dick. It's her feelings, I don't wanna confuse her and make her resent me for admitting anything."
Johnson smirked. "Okay who the hell are you? Gilinsky would never pass an opportunity - I mean I know after what happened with Madison - but damn."
"This feels like something else, I just know she deserves better."
"And you think that's you? I love you G but your past might scare our Simone away." Johnson reminded me.
I closed my eyes. "I don't wanna think about that now. I just want to see her all the time."
"I might cry man." Johnson teased and I nudged him. "Nah on the real, I've seen the weird change in you and I just didn't know it was cause of Simone."
"There's no change. Maybe she's just bringing the real G out and that's why I like it. I like who I am when I'm with her."
"Then go and get her."
"She has to want me to." I shrugged. I didn't plan on opening up this much about Simone but it's been too much holding in and I knew Johnson would never tell a soul nor would he judge me.
"Look, I get it." He nodded. "Be her friends now, you can tell she's going through it with Jason - I don't think anyone else sees it. But also be careful because Jason's crazy and he may take it out on her if he finds out how you feel."
"What do you mean? Like - "
"I've seen him - you have to - I've seen him talk down on her." Johnson said quietly. "I don't know if he still does but I just don't want her to go through that."
I nodded. I was speechless because I hadn't realized that could be a dilemma and Simone would never tell me if that was happening. She protected that idiot so much, it made me mad.
"If him and his goons come at you, you've got us all though." Johnson reassured me as the bell rang.
I nodded, thankful and was about to say something when an enthusiastic person popped up in front of me and gripped my hand.
"Come on!" It was Simone. "Our group lesson in biology, don't wanna be late right?"
I chuckled, mood lifted. "Never."
I let her yank me down the hallway, her small fingers wrapped about my wrist sent me into terror that I might pull her closer in this public corridor.
"You kids have fun!" I heard Johnson shout and laugh as we headed to our first period.
Probably should have told him that.
-
"I mean bacteria had many degrees, you know good or bad - " our biology teacher went on casually as each group examined their chosen bacteria in a petri dish.
She was walking between tables, not really paying attention to a single group alone. She was mostly at the front most desk, helping the unsure kids - where as Simone and I were near to the back.
"Do you wanna look first?" Simone asked pointing at the scope.
I smiled. "Why? You scared of the little bacteria?"
Simone rolled her eyes. "I thought you might like to meet your species."
I laughed. "Ooooh shit. Where did that come from?"
"I've been spending too much time with you." Simone covered her face and giggled.
"Let me look." I took first initiative, I didn't want he to think I was totally daft.
But then I felt retarded because I didn't quite know how to work the scope so the dish looked blurry.
"Uh, Simone - its fucking blurry." I mumbled - my eye still attached to the scope.
She giggled. "That's okay, keep looking and I'm gonna adjust the zoom. You tell me when it's perfect."
"Alright..." I didn't feel so stupid since she spoke so softly and willing to help me.
I felt a shock when Simone's small hand touched my lower back as she adjusted the zoom. I don't think she realized it, but she clung to me.
"How does it look now?" Simone asked gently.
"Little bit more." I told her.
"Now?" She asked. I felt her shoulder against my arm, she was so close. So touching like she was comfortable with me.
"Yes! Perfect...oh my friggen word this little guy looks wicked!" I exclaimed as I examined the bacteria.
Simone chuckled at my amazement. I was too shook to even play it cool. I guess I didn't care if I looked like a retard in front of her.
"My turn." Simone clapped her hands as I stood up to let her have a go at the scope.
Simone slid in front of me - it slipped my mind that we were in class but I didn't move fast enough so her back slid against my chest. I found my hand brushing her waist - just were her hips began.
"Oh shit, sorry." Simone jumped when my hand touched her - she leaned forward and accidentally knocked her shin against the chair leg.
"Oh damn." I shifted away but my hand now on her shoulders as she clutched her shin.
"Are you alright, Simone?" Our biology teacher looked concerned from the front.
Simone chuckled. "Just a little bump."
Everyone nodded and turned back to their work. Instead of looking at the bacteria shit - Simone looked back at me, her eyes wide and her face flushed.
We didn't say anything but maybe a silence message passed between us. I just didn't know what.
