Chapter 8

I try to shake off what just happened. I stand up and take a deep breath. I don't wipe off the dirt because it doesn't bother me. I look around and I see Johnny and Ponyboy getting up.

I walk towards them and I ask, "Where do we go now?"

"To the church." answers Johnny.

After debating about which direction to go in, we are off. We walk for a few hours then we see a farmer on his mower. "Ponyboy." I say, "Look." I point at the farmer.

"Do you think the newspaper is out yet?" asks Johnny.

"No, it can't be." Ponyboy says, "I will just go up to him and ask him where the church is." Ponyboy starts walking towards him. We see Pony moving his hands which means it is going well. Ponyboy always talks with his hands. I do it too and so did Mom.

Ponyboy waves us over. Johnny and I race over to him.

After we got the directions to the church we started walking in that direction. Once we got there Johnny went to the store so we could have food for while we were here, Ponyboy went to lay down in the church and I walked outside to look around. There is a little pond out back and a pump for fresh water.

I go and sit down by the pond. I look at the water and think about how Mom, Dad, Darry, Soda, Ponyboy and I would go to the country for a week or so. Those were the days. Sometimes I wonder what life would be like if they hadn't died. Would I still be in this situation? Would Mom or Dad scold Ponyboy for staying out so late? What would life be like?
