Chapter 1

Lynnlee's POV

I have been living on my own since I became a teenager. I lived alone in a small house made for a married couple not looking to have kids.

Well, now it's for a kid whose parents wanted nothing to do with her. My parents left for no reason other than they were sick of taking care of me.

They left a credit card and things to start me out in life but that was it. Once a week about $500 is put on the card. So $2,000 a month for me to use. Not too bad. I never really used much of it so I have all of the money I could ever need for the future.

I live right outside of town but close enough to where I could ride my bike everywhere. When I turned 16 a car showed up at my house in my driveway with a note from my parents and a fake license. At first, I wasn't sure if I should use it but then I realized it didn't matter. I wouldn't get in trouble for using it, my parents would because they aren't even around.

I don't remember much of my parents. They were never really around in the first place. Mom was a scientist and dad wrote books.

The few times that they were home they abuse me and made me do things that kids my age shouldn't be doing. Nothing too bad just cooking and cleaning and taking care of my baby brother and sister.

If I did something wrong I got punished for it with spankings from mom and a slap or more on my face by my dad. I've been really badly beaten too.

I still have my baby brother and sister around. Although they aren't baby's anymore. Now they are fifth graders.

I bet you're wondering how we have been living without the care of a parent. Well, I learned to grow up pretty fast considering I became an adult when I was born. But also because of my amazing neighbor. Her name is Sally. She's an older lady who has been keeping an eye on me for years. She helped me care for my siblings when they were sick. She helped me create a garden to grow fresh vegetables and how to pick them. She helped me with school related things for when they needed a parent or guardian signature or someone to pick me up from school when I was sick. She did it all.

Sally was an amazing woman who never stopped helping. When she was a little girl she helped hide black people when they were running away from the south. When she was a teenager. She fought for women's rights. She was never married. During the great depression, she took in many kids because she came from a very wealthy family. She in her lifetime never had any kids of her own.

I have seen pictures of her and a man in her house before but she never told me who the man was.

Sally was born with the brightest red hair I have ever seen along with her scarlet colored eyes. She had a small nose and small ears. Her face and body were covered in freckles and her skin that was almost like her hair. A tad bit red.

I called her my grandmother because she reminded me of one.

I never knew any of my family so she was my family. Other than my two siblings.

However, one day in particular at this house changed everything. Something that I would never have guessed would ever happen...happened.
