Jamie's POV
I hear a faint and distinct raining sound next to my right ear as bright, eye-blinding sunlight starts flooding my eyes. I blink and turn my head away from the rays of the sun when I feel a hard object pressing into the side of my head and the ringing get ear piercingly louder.
I lift myself off of my bed and realize my phone was going off along with my computer playing "Paper Doll" by Bea Miller. I quickly mute my computer and pick up my phone without looking to see who it is.
"Hello?" I groan still half asleep from my nap.
"Hey, um, is this Jamie?" the voice asked. It was a raspy voice and very familiar. I swear I'd heard it somewhere but I was too tired to try and figure it out.
"Yeah, who's this?" I really don't want to deal with this right now. I just want to sleep even though I just took a nap.
"Uh, I don't know if you remember me," the voice explained, "but it's Bea Miller. The girl who violently grabbed you and forced you into a strange secret room on a roof."
All at once my eyes go wide and I'm fully awake. Why the hell was she calling me? Not that it wasn't a pleasant surprise it was just a big surprise.
"Oh, yeah! Hey! How have you been? I haven't seen you since...this morning." I scrunch my face up in confusion, wondering how it had only been that long. It had seemed like days since I was being pulled through the dark, quiet city and into a room on a roof only to find out the girl who saved me was famous and beloved by my annoying little cousin.
"I've been okay," she giggles in that sweet voice. "What have you been up to?" I have to think about the question for a bit before I answer. I didn't want to tell the truth and say 'hey, I've been stalking you on the Internet' but I didn't want to say 'nothing' because she'll know I'm lying and ask what the real answer was.
"Um...just browsing...the internet," I babbled cringing at my answer. That could be taken in so many wrong ways.
"Oh, may I ask what you were browsing for on the internet? Or is that too personal?" she asks in a teasing tone. I bite my lip and feel my cheeks turning bright red.
"Uh...I--"
"Jamie, it's fine. You don't have to tell me." I let out a sigh of relief, slowly and carefully stand up, and stretch my aching muscles.
"Cool," I nod. "So, why did you call me, anyway?" There was a small pause at the question and nothing could be heard but white noise. Then a loud sigh.
"Oh, right. Um...oh, now that I think about it I probably shouldn't have called," she answers in embarrassment. My face falls at the words, as I'm now more curious than ever. Why did she call me? What was the reasoning behind her backing off last minute?
"No! Come on, Bea! Now I'm curious so just tell me and if I think it's stupid I'll tell you." I hear a soft giggle escaped her lips followed by a sniffle. Was she crying? "Bea? You okay?"
"Oh, yeah! Just a cold," she mumbles. I couldn't tell if she was lying or not, but all I really cared about right now was what it was she called me about. "Um...so I wanted to ask. Actually, let me explain. So, my family and I are going on vacation to Orlando and my Aunt Kelly, the one who has a beach house in Orlando, where we'll be staying, can't go. Anyway, we have an extra ticket, so, I was maybe kinda sorta wondering if you would want to come?"
I had to be dreaming, right? Why was she asking me to go on vacation with her family? We just met. I didn't know her or her family very well. Was I still asleep? Was I still dreaming? I would've woken up by now. Right?
"Um...well, I--what?" I stutter, more confused than I had ever been in my life. So many questions were flying around in my head right now, bunching side to side against my skull. The feelings I was feeling were beyond description. What is life?
"I'm sorry, this was stupid I shouldn't--"
"Yes!" I interrupt without a second thought. To be honest, I thought this was a crazy idea, but something pushed me to just say yes. I don't know, I probably need mental help.
"Wha--REALLY?!" Bea sequels in response. I let out a breathless chuckle and walk over to my desk, sitting in the wooden chair.
"Yeah! Of course!" I say with enthusiasm. "But, um, when?"
"Oh, yeah! Sorry, we're leaving in five days, so this Sunday. You know I've been thinking since we haven't known each other for long we should find sometimes to hang out. OH! You and your Aunt should come over and have dinner with my family!"
What? No, no, no, my aunt can't come over. That's not happening. There was no way I was saying yes. No way.
"Sure! That sounds like a great idea!"
What the hell was wrong with me?
"Sweet! Are you free tomorrow?" she asks sounding overjoyed. I take my phone away from my ear and let out a long, loud sigh, leaning back in my desk chair, and somehow eventually sliding off of the chair and onto the floor. After a few seconds of rubbing my temples, I pick up my phone and press it to my ears.
"Yeah, I'm free," I mumble.
"Great! Meet me at Village Coffee at eleven. I got to go. See ya!"
"Bye!"
I hang up, toss my phone on my bed, and lay face down on the floor. What had I gotten myself into?
