To Read a Face

It's funny to see

What people think

When thoughts are written on their faces

Like letters in the alphabet

Clearly spelling out

What they knew and thought and felt

I knew what words

Would be written there

Ere I began my tale

Murderer, psychopath, hatred, disgust

But no, a startling opposite

Love

Care

And a willingness to trust

And no infinite series

Could hold enough for me to read

On and on I would speak

And on and on their faces played

The words I didn't know I need

And for the first time

A tear fell down

Not in agony at my mistake

But in joy that I'd found

Forgiveness, mine to take

I'd done what I had to do

I knew

Surer than sure

But knowing that they believed it too

Makes life a mountain easier.
