They stood wrapped in each other's arms watching their child for a while. Daryl could have stayed like this for the rest of his life. Who was he kidding?! He wanted to stay like this for the rest of eternity, watching over his wife and child, and maybe one day their grandchildren and so forth until they would finally at some point be able to live in peace again. This world sucked. He couldn't change anything about it and that sucked even more. He wanted his daughter to grow up in safety, in a world as normal as possible and maybe if they could stay at the prison, if they worked even harder at securing the fences, maybe this dream wasn't as impossible as it seemed at first glance.
"What are you thinking about?" Daryl hadn't noticed her watching him. She was looking at him with her eyebrows raised and it was only now that Daryl realized he had been furrowing his brows, his forehead lying in deep wrinkles.
"Nothin'", he muttered. "C'mon, I'll introduce ya to the others." Daryl separated himself with a light kiss on her nose. She giggled like she used to ever since they were teenagers. Young and reckless. Daryl sighed. Easier times. Not happier, but definitely easier.
"I think I've met a few of them already. They seem nice", she smiled taking his hand in hers, entwining their fingers. She was obviously not willing to let go of him and he wasn't either.

"Yeah, Glenn and Maggie..."
"Oh, right", she giggled again. "I was so distracted, I think I forgot their names."
"Ya have to meet Rick", Daryl mumbled ignoring her comment. He felt his cheeks blushing and didn't want to go dive into this topic this any further. She still managed to make him nervous just like that. He felt like the young man he was when they first met, nervous, with red cheeks, and sweaty hands. Maybe she wouldn't notice if he kept acting cool.
"Rick, huh?!" She smiled at him. "He's the leader, isn't he? I think I saw him when we arrived."
"Yeah... Ya comin' now?! I wanna...ya know... introduce ya... properly..."
"As your wife, you mean?!" She flashed a bright smile at him. "I'd love to meet everyone."
"Okay then..." Daryl threw a last glance over at their daughter, studied her sleeping face as if he saw it for the first time. In a way he did. It had been so long since he had last seen them...He turned around to look at her again. "Let's go."
He pulled her after him holding her hand clasped tightly in his. Daryl wouldn't let go of her ever again, he wouldn't leave them out of sight. He was determined to never lose them again and he would do anything he could to keep his promise.
They found Rick near his room chatting with Hershel about farming. Daryl had noticed that this had been the only thing on Rick's mind lately: Crops...farming... providing a home for everyone, a home that would work out long term. They were here to stay and Daryl had high hopes that this time they would build a long lasting home. And now that his family was here too.. it felt even more like home to him.
"Rick", he mumbled stepping from one foot to the other. He was so nervous all of a sudden even though he could hardly tell what it was that made him this nervous.
"What is it?" Rick asked turning around. Hershel too looked them up and down seeming surprised by the woman standing behind Daryl.
"I...uhm", Daryl mumbled searching for the right words. Standing in front of them now, he suddenly wasn't so confident anymore. "Wanna introduce ya to someone..." Maybe it was stupid... maybe he shouldn't have come here. But Rick and Hershel just smiled at them, big warm smiles that left Daryl speechless.
"Maggie and Glenn already went around and told everyone!", Rick grinned.
"We're more than happy to welcome you here", Hershel took a step forward and shook her hand, pulled her into his arms to give her a warm welcome hug. Daryl felt jealous for a second but was overwhelmed with gratitude and happiness when he saw the smile on his wife's face. It was in this moment that Daryl realized his family had grown so much over the past couple of months. It wasn't only him anymore, there were so many people around them, people he cared deeply about. He could now share all this with his wife, with the person he loved most in this world.
"Thank you", she whispered returning Hershel's hug. "I'm more than happy to be here." Daryl noticed her eyes shifting towards him for a second. Yeah, he was more than happy to have her back as well.
"We should talk tomorrow", Rick jumped in. "I bet you guys got a lot to... talk 'bout", he grinned obviously having something else in mind. Daryl felt the warmth on his cheeks and turned away quickly.
"Just thought it would be nice to introduce her right away", he muttered looking down.
"Sure", Rick hurried to say. "But c'mon, Daryl. You two had been apart for so long and we got plenty of time to talk about anything and everything..."
"Celebrate your reunion!", Hershel laughed grabbing Rick's shoulder to turn him around pretending to be extremely occupied with their serious talk.
"You heard him", she winked at him flashing another bright smile. It was as if she simply couldn't stop smiling and Daryl felt the same way. Even though he kept his smile to himself. It was more of an internal smile, the biggest one he had ever felt but still only inside.
"Let's go", he smirked back kissing her hand lightly. She giggled again, just like she used to when they were young...
"Daryl", she suddenly got serious again.
"What is it?" He turned around his eyebrows raised.
"What happened to Merle's hand though? And what is that thing he built to replace it? I'm a bit worried our daughter might be afraid of him like that..."
"Not like she wasn't before...", Daryl laughed but his joke failed and he looked down quickly. "Sorry", he muttered. "He lost it..when the other's left him on a roof to die and.. the story's a mess. I'll tell ya later, okay?!", he hurried to explain. Daryl wasn't too eager to spend his first evening with her chatting about Merle or anything that might cause trouble in the future... just like Merle for example. Tonight he didn't want to even think about it. He just wanted to hold her close to him. He was curious how they survived this long but then again... Daryl wasn't sure if he really wanted to know. He himself had done some terrible things.. Did he really want to know about the things his wife had to do in order to survive?! He sighed deeply.
"What is it now?" She looked at him. They had almost reached his cell by now and Daryl decided to stay silent until he knew they had at least a little privacy. Living with so many people there were eyes and ears everywhere and sooner or later everyone would know about everything anyway but for now he really wanted to at least feel like they were alone.
"I was just... thinkin' 'bout all the things I wanna ask ya...", he murmured turning around to face her. But when his eyes met hers he forgot about all his questions, all his fear and insecurities. He was drowning in her eyes, swallowed by their depths and he didn't want to get to the surface ever again. Taking her face in his hands he studied every inch of her skin, slowly covering her eyelids with his lips, softly brushing his thumb across her lips. "But they can wait", he whispered looking at her again. Theses wrinkles.. had they been there before? Where did she get them? And was that a scar on her forehead? Daryl ran his finger across the damaged skin. "They'll have to wait", he whispered again covering her lips with his before she could say another word. He wanted to know about everything she had been through... but simply not tonight. She was here with him again... everything else would have to wait until tomorrow.
