„Rick should be close behind", Daryl mumbled gesturing towards the gates where he expected Rick to appear any second now. "There's a bunch of new people with him." Daryl turned back to face me. His blue eyes were observing me closely. I smiled at him.
"That's just fine, I love new people." I took a step closer to him and wrapped my arms around his waist. Immediately welcomed in a warm embrace I rested my head against his chest listening to his heartbeat for a while.
"Just hope they're not gonna cause trouble", he murmured against my hair stroking my back. Shivers ran down my spine and I had to close my eyes breathing in every second of this moment, wishing for it to last forever.
"Nah, I'm sure they're gonna fit in just fine", I said lifting my head up to look at him. Getting up on my toes I brushed my lips against his.
Little did I know that those people would mean nothing but trouble for me.
We were still standing wrapped in each other's arms, holding on as if letting go would mean breaking apart, when Rick finally arrived back home. Daryl reluctantly let go of me because he knew I wanted to go greet Rick and he followed close behind as he too wanted to welcome our family back home. Because that was what everyone had become over the course of time.
"Rick, you're home!" I was running towards his van waving my arms above my head. "I'm glad you're back ho-" My words stayed stuck in my throat. Rick had stepped out of the van and was now standing in brought sunlight welcoming the new people to the prison.

"What's wrong?" Daryl stopped beside me looking at me with a worried expression on his face. I felt his strong arms around my waist supporting me as I felt all blood rushing out of my face. My throat was so dry I had difficulties spitting out the words.
"I know them", I whispered leaning in to Daryl's touch, desperately seeking his support. Upon noticing my weak knees he immediately wrapped both arms around me and pulled me closer to him, relieving me of the suddenly difficult task to stand on my own.
"Who are they?", Daryl murmured back not letting the strangers out of his view. They were smiling and chatting with Rick.
"My..." I had to clear my throat. "My parents. And...my ex-boyfriend."
"Your ex?!", Daryl snarled next to me. I could feel the temperature around us dropping by a few degrees.
"Wasn't for long and I never really liked them. I...only tried to please my parents", I burred in an attempt to explain myself.
"Honey, is that you?" I suddenly heard a very familiar voice drawling from across the yard. My mother hurried towards me her arms reaching out to me in an overly dramatic gesture pretending that she was actually really excited to see her long lost daughter again.
"That's not my name, mother", I gnarled back as I straightened my back. I forced myself to stop relying on Daryl's support and he understood immediately stepping a few inches away from me. But he wouldn't break contact with me, his hand was resting on my hip making very clear to whom I belonged.
My mother's eyes went down to where Daryl was touching me. Just as expected there was a disgusted look on her face when she raised her eyes again.
"You do realize whom we've brought with us, right?! Standing right over there. I thought you would be happy to be reunited with your boyfriend, honey." She forced a smile on her face but the disgust in her eyes would not vanish at all.
"I'm standing next to him right now, mother, I'm fine, thank you." I tried to sound as cold as I could.
"Oh, well, I still think you should come over and say hello, you know, your father is over there as well. I'm sure you want to see him, tell him how much you missed him.
"As I said: I'm fine." I looked her up and down. She still looked pretty good considering she must have been out there surviving for a while now.
"Okay, well, you know, honey, we're over there, just in case you change your mind." She gave me another of her forced smiles before she turned around to join my father and ex-boyfriend.
"That's your mother?" Daryl whispered next to me. He tried but he still couldn't hide his surprise and disgust about that woman.
"I'm afraid she is. I... I don't know if I can handle them being around, Daryl. Getting away from them was the best thing that ever happened to me. I can't...have them back in my life." I turned around to face him. His eyes were kind and gentle when they met mine and he placed a soft kiss on my forehead.
"I won't allow them to get anywhere near ya. They ain't gonna make you feel bad again, I promise." He pulled me close again resting his cheek on my head. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath hoping that he would be able to keep his promise.
