Kayani POV:

I was waiting for my mother to come home so I could leave for work. I couldn't leave Lani here by herself but pretty soon I was going to be late for work... again. I called my mother for the fourth time now but still no response. "Mom, I'm going to be late if you don't come home soon. Please answer or text me. Bye." I said into the phone on her voicemail before hanging up.

After only two minutes but what felt like forever, I decided to just bring Lani to work with me. I worked at Barnes and Noble and my boss was a real jerk. He was extremely rude and would have no problem with firing me. "Lani, please hurry! I have to go!" I yelled up the stairs before jogging out of the house. I started the car and once Lani was in, I pulled off towards my job.

We had arrived in five minutes and I made sure to tell Lani to stay in the kids section until our mother came to get her. I ran to the back to punch in but was stopped by my boss. "M-Mr. Douglas. H-hi. I was jus-" I tried to speak but was cut off.

"Save it Ms. Little. This was your third strike. I've given you enough chances. I'm going to have to ask you to leave, you're fired.

"B-but Mr. Douglas, it wasn't my fault this time. My mother was supposed to-"

"I don't want to hear it Kayani. We'll send you your last paycheck in the mail. Have a nice day." he said before walking off, leaving me stuck in my place. I wanted to cry but there were entirely too many people around me. I went to get Lani from the kids section when I seen her talking to some man.

"Kehlani Marie Little, you know better than to talk to strangers! Get your ass over here, now! We're leaving."

The man stood from his kneeling position and I had to admit, he was fine. A nice chocolate man with beautiful teeth and an amazing smile. "I'm sorry, she was just talking to my son here and I figured I'd help them out with reading this book. I don't mean any harm. Nice to meet you Lani. Come on, Junior." the man said to the little boy as they began to walk off.

"Wait!" I called after him. "I just wanted to apologize for the way I just acted. I don't usually act like that, I'm just not having the best day right now. I'm Kayani by the way." I held my hand out to shake his.

"Kayani. A beautiful name for an even more beautiful woman." he said taking my hand and his and raising it to his lips to kiss which made me blush instantly. "Tell me something Kayani, are you seeing anyone?"

"No, I'm not actually Mr...."

"Oh, my apologies. My name is Xavier."

"Well Xavier, no, I'm not seeing anyone."
