Survival
Chapter: Twenty-Six
Days pass by and still do reply from Sam. This must be how Sam felt when he waited eagerly from a call, an email from me. But I was an asshole. I just ignored him and forgot about him.
Even after I left Houston, I never thought how he would feel. I guess I'm not a good person after all.
"Don't just sit there," Stephanie tells me as I sit in the couch staring off into nothing. "Don't you have to work?"
"What?" I respond.
"You deaf?" She asks." I said, are you going to work." She emphasizes every word as if I was deaf or something.
"Yeah, I was just, never mind. I'll better go if I don't want to be late." I start walking to the door.
"Hey, you want me to take you?" She asks.
"Yeah, if that's not a problem," I respond.
"Let's go," she says.
"Where's Emma," I ask.
"Left early. Had to things," she responds.
We walk out and get into her car. It's a Mustang, like Emma's, but yellow.
Does everyone have a nice car around here?
We zoom out of the apartments, fast as lightning.
It doesn't take a second for Stephanie to start the conversation. "So, Adam,"she starts with her sweet voice."You like Emma, right?"
"Huh, what," I pretend I'm deaf.
"You. Like. Emma." She makes every word into a sentence.
"Umm..." This. Is. Awkward.
"Look, you don't have to say it," she tells me." It's to obvious. The way you look at her. Your pupils literally dilate fifty percent larger. And scientifically speaking, that either means you love her, or hate her, and I'm sure you don't hate her."
I'm speechless. Since when Stephanie get to smart, since when did she know this, and how does she know this? "Fine, I admit it. I love your best friend Emma Ray."
Stephanie's smile grows. She's happy. "Oh, I'm so excited."
"Do you think I should tell her?" I ask Stephanie.
"Adam, let me feel you in a little about Emma. She's only had one boyfriend. And it was in Middle School, "when she mentions Middle School she makes a face. "Emma loved that asshole. And what does he do? He cheats on her with some slut-whore. Since then, Emma hasn't had a relationship and I don't know why she doesn't date. I've been cheated on, and I've managed to move on. Why can't she?"
"Are you saying I should stay away from her?" I ask.
"No, I'm saying you should try to make you like you, and I'm sure she's developing affection for you, trust me."
That made feel so good.
"I'll help you out," she says. "I'll play Cupid and you just be Romeo and soon Emma will be your Julia."
"You mean Juliet?" I correct her.
"Sure, sure, whatever," she says." The important thing here is that Emma needs to fall for you, got that?"
I nod.
We arrive at the café and I thank Stephanie.
"No problem. It was my pleasure to help," she told me right before she flew off in her Mustang.
Work wasn't hard today because I was happy. Happy to know that Emma might feel something about me.
