Survival

Chapter: Twenty-Nine

At the beginning of our date, Emma is a bit mad that Stephanie broke her word."I just hate it when people say things and end up not doing it, it ticks me off!" Said Emma after Stephanie hung up on me.

"Yeah, me too," I say.

"So I guess we'll just have to eat then," Emma says."I'm hungry." She calls the waiter.

"What would you like to drink?" the waiter asks.

"Well, I could use a good wine glass, but I'm not legal yet so I'll just have a glass of water."

I crack a smile of laughter.

"And you, sir?"

"Me? I'll have a good beer, but since you'll notice that I'm not twenty-one you'll tell me to change my order, so I'll just have what the beautiful girl is having."

Emma laughs. I don't know if it's for my joke or the fact that I just called her beautiful.

The waitress leaves and after a moment comes back with our drinks.

Emma orders something I can't pronounce, and I just end up ordering the same thing as her. It turns out to be something delicious, but such little amount.

"I love this restaurant," she says." I haven't eaten here in a while."

"Yeah, me too," I joke around.

She laughs with her vivid smile, showing off her perfect rows of teeth.

"So, Adam," Emma says as she picks up her glass of water."Do you know what your going to in the future." And she takes a small sip.

This catches me by surprise."Now I that I think about it," I respond."I don't know. And honestly, I don't have to know because the future isn't here yet, the present is here and that's all that matters. The future can hold a complete different thing than what I may think. I can say that I want to go to college, get married, and move to Italy. But what would happen if the next day I lose my mom or my dad... or my whole family, you know. So, I'm just happy right now. I like the present because you are living in that exact second. I wouldn't want to know the future, unless it guarantees a good future. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to know." Emma gets lost with the comforts of my words.

"Very well said, Adam Foster."

"Thanks, Emma Ray."

"Cheers, Adam," she says. We both hold our glasses of water and gently touch to one another.

Then I say something that really surprises Emma."Emma," I call her name.

"Yes," she responds.

"This is the best birthday I've had."
