Survival
Chapter: Thirty
"What?" Is all Emma can say. "How come you never told me, does Stephanie know?"
"Nope. No one."
"Why not?"
"Because I never celebrate my birthday," I say. "Ever since that day, you know which one, I never even bother to tell a soul. Birthdays are for what? To remind your a year closer to death?"
"Adam Foster, this is unbearable," Emma says in a strict voice. "Everyone deserves a birthday, just wait. I'll get you something."
She calls the waiter up and tells her,"Today is this gentleman's birthday. Would mind bring us a cake, and can you write in frosting 'happy birthday Adam Foster, and if you have any candles, would you mind putting them on the cake."
"Of course," the waitress tells Emma. "Happy birthday, sir." She smiles to me and walks away.
And in that moment I realize how I haven't heard the words "happy birthday" from anybody else besides Sam for years. And I get a little emotional.
"What's wrong?" Emma asks me. "Don't you want to have a real birthday?
"No, it's nothing," I say. "I thing I got something in my eye.
"Oh, let me get it, may I?"
She leans toward me and I naively open my eye wide open, and she blows... into my eye.
"There, I'm good. Thanks."
"No problem."
In about thirty minutes a birthday cake arrives. I have no idea if they already had it or if they went off an bought it. Either way, my birthday cake is here.
"Hey, everyone," Emma shouts. "Today's my good friend Adam's special day. Would y'all mind singing with me."
Almost everyone in the restaurant joins Emma."HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ADAM! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!" The melody echoes in my ear and fills me with joy. I can't stop smiling. Everybody claps after the song is over.
"Thank you everyone!" Emma shouts. She sits and stares into me.
"I can't believe you just did that," I say."Thank you."
"That was nothing," she says."If you would've given me more time to prepare, I would've throw you a sickass bash!"
"No, no "bashes"," I say."Just thing. Simpleness. With you."
"Awesome, time to eat this, but at least blows off your candles. And make the three wishes "
I spit air, and the fire goes off. But no wish is beside because I'm perfectly fine as if right now.
She grabs a knife and starts cutting the miniature cake.
The cake turns out to be the most delicious cake I've eaten. A chocolate fudge cake. My favorite.
"Ok, we should get going," she says. "We have ton of things to do."
"What?" I say. "It's not too far to midnight."
"So? We're gonna go celebrate your party... the right way."
We assure the check is paid, as Stephanie said. We leave the restaurant and Emma tells me that tonight will be epic.
I hope so, too.
