Feeling my head smash into the car window for the millionth time since pulling onto this beaten down looking road. Seeing the occasional farm in between the woods and open fields. The sun was high in the sky as the crops didn't move due to the lack of a breeze. The summer time had not been kind here, despite the air conditioning in the car you could see the heat on the payment and feel it on the doors.
"How are you feeling Nova?" Giving my dad a small nod as he continued to drive. I could see the tenseness in his hands as he gripped the wheel making his knuckles near white. What was he so tense for? Seeing him like this was rare, despite his 6'2' height and massive amount of muscles he was usually full of laughs and tried his best to ease the mood around me. Today was different, with the moving across country and him obviously worried about something I tried my best to not show any negative emotions.
Moving isn't so bad. It wasn't like I was leaving behind an entire flock of friends. Just two good ones but with the promises of lots of texts, some visits and promises on not replacing them it wasn't as hard as I expected leaving them. That is although it only being the second day being away from them. I know i'll miss my binge netflix and popcorn days with them soon enough. Specially with summer not even over yet and senior year not kicking off for another two weeks.
"Almost there." it was more of a mumble as he pulled down a road, revealing smoother pavement and in the distance you could see the beginning of more civilization besides farms and forests, although the forests were still thick. "You hungry sport?" I felt my eyes roll at the word 'sport'.
"Just a little." My voice was low and a bit scratchy as he just smiled back at me.
"Okay, I guess it would be time to sample some of their cuisine." Watching the forest fade as suburbs and small shops began to fill it. Showing us just what this small town looked like. It wasn't small like less than 500 people small but it was below five thousand for sure.
Watching the streets lead down the subdivisions as everything held a peaceful and happy vibe. Watching the people walk around as we passed. Seeing a couple people walking their dogs. I watched as my dad had begun navigating through here like a wizard as you could see a little more commercial part of the town pop into view. Seeing the street crowded with supermarkets, restaurants, shops and seeing the faint look of a mall in the distance. Admiring the sudden change from small town to small city here as it went on for blocks as if it was a modern splash.
"Dine in or take out." Pondering the options as I looked at my outfit. Tank top and jeans, not exactly the dine in kind of vibe I had going.
"Take out?" Feeling my chest hitch as I mindlessly coughed and caught my breath. Seeing him ponder aswell before nodding.
"Let's go grab some chinese then." Seeing him turn again towards the giant mall as he pulled in. Seeing how busy it was as we had parked. The mall looked to be pretty big and from the outside it looked to have two storeys to it with a strip mall on the outside part leading all the way to the back end of the parking lot where a walmart resides.
"I-uh googled ahead and knew that there would be a chinese food place here. Did you want to get out and look around?" Nodding my head I nearly sprung out of the car. stretching my legs as the immediately got pin cushion feelings in them as I over dramaticized it, my father simply laughing and shaking his head at me. As we got to the doors I felt amazed at what I was seeing, being immediately greeted by a beautiful fountain as people sat, stood, walked and chatted around us. It wasn't crowded but there was certainly a few people here.
Hearing my father's phone ring as he tensed up again, looking over as he groaned and gave me a the 'Why are they calling already' look. Laughing as he answered the phone.
"Hello?" I heard some long talking on the other end as he said the occasional yes and good. Taking a look around as I watched the multiple clothing stores, a couple gadgets and make up lining the way. Feeling my curiosity get the best of me as I turned to my dad and waved my phone signalling he could call me. I watched as he looked unsure but eventually nodded. Smiling before lightly walking down the corridor. Watching as people for the most part ignored me, which is what I prefered.
Feeling my phone beep as I looked down and Willa's name popped up on my screen.
Miss you already! Can't believe you left me here with Hayden. I knew you secretly hated me ;) -Willa. I smiled and typed my quick reply of 'You bet' and sent it before knocking into something and stumbling back.
"Hey! Watch where you're going!" I felt the voice scrape my ears as I went to apologize. I saw her flick her blond hair behind her shoulder as her bright red lips were in a sneer. "Great, now I need a whole new outfit because trash just touched me." I felt my face turn red before she just tsked her tongue at me.
"Let's just go Em," Someone grabbed her arm and she pushed past me roughly. Giving her a death glare before I saw her and a couple people disappear. Feeling like that was beyond enough exploring I decided to just head back. No point staying here with a spoiled mood now.
