I spent the next morning in the real world, shopping for food with the money my parents left me, so Ash wouldn't die of starvation. When I got home, I was left to put everything away by myself, while he rested, waiting for noon to come. I was in the middle of preparing sandwiches for lunch when there came a knock on the door. Dropping everything, I rushed to answer it, throwing open the door with a big smile on my face.
"You're here!" Uncle Kevin pushed a smile onto his worn face and welcomed my hug when I wrapped my arms around him.
"So excited to see me? This patient of yours must be on the verge of death." I knocked him on the shoulder playfully with my fist before letting him come inside.
"I can be happy to see you. It's been a long time."
"I guess you're right about that. So, what am I here for exactly?"
"It's kinda hard to explain, but you'll see for yourself. I did my best patching, but I think it's starting to get infected." My eyes glanced to the medical case he carried with him and felt better, knowing Ash could be taken care of sooner than later. "This way." I lead the way to my parents' bedroom and knocked lightly on the door before opening it. Ash was awake, but lying on his stomach with his face in the pillow, looking like he was trying to suffocate himself. "Still alive?" I called.
"Unfortunately," he grumbled back, groaning as he shifted his shoulders and sat up slowly, wincing. My uncle just stared at the man blankly before turning to me with his eyebrows raised.
"Pretty face and a British accent, huh? No wonder you're helping him." I choked, and slapped his arm for the quiet comment before clearing my throat and walking towards Ash. He chuckled behind me.
"Ash, this is my Uncle, Kevin." I looked back at the doctor standing in the threshold of the bedroom. "This is Ash, a... Friend of mine."
"I'd stand to greet you myself. Unfortunately, I find myself in a great deal of pain." Ash faked a smile to be polite. Getting over the shock, Kevin walks in, waving him off.
"That's alright. So, where's the damage?"
"My back." Ash started to pull down the robe to show the bandage work I did. After seeing how much wrapping was used, Kevin sent me a quizzical stare.
"What happened, exactly?"
"Uh... Hit and run?" I smiled sheepishly, gaining an unconvinced hum from the doctor as he turned back to Ash. When he gave him the same look, I made motions for him to keep his lips zipped. Forcing out a soft chuckle, Ash played along.
"I can't remember really. It happened so fast. I lost consciousness at some point and when I woke up, I was like this." I give him a thumbs up, but quickly put it down when Kevin glanced back at me.
"Alright then, let's see what we've got." Ash turned his back to him, allowing the doctor to unwrap the bandages. His eyes widened slightly at the two long lines of stitched flesh where the wings used to be. I fiddled with my necklace anxiously as he examined them.
