Lana tried her best to avoid Jessie for the rest of the day. She didn't know what anything meant anymore. Suddenly she started to wonder why Jessie and her had never given it a go. She seemed to remember a time in 10th grade. Ah, yes. She remembered now. Jessie had walked in on her in a compromising position with none other than Jessie's girlfriend. It hadn't broken their friendship, mostly because Lana had groveled and told her that she was drunk and her girlfriend had taken advantage. Either way, Jessie had never really looked at her the same. She still told her all her secrets and went to her for advice but it their friendship had never really gotten back that same trust. And well, without trust, you sure can't be in a relationship with someone. Jessie really thought of Lana as this terrible flirt who played with girls hearts for fun. Lana had never told Jessie that ever since that day that she got caught with Jessie's girlfriend, she hadn't had sex with anyone. Jessie would probably scoff at the very idea of Lana being chaste because in high school Lana had made it her goal to seduce every girl in their class. And she had succeeded. Jessie's girlfriend had been her last. Lana didn't mind it so much. She just avoided women in general. And it seemed to work fine for her. She even went on acting like she didn't regret all her decisions in high school.
Most girls thought that she was still quite the player. She guessed reputations like that never really went away. Especially when you go to college with half of your graduating class. She was walking down the hall to her class, carrying her books against her chest and wondering where she had gone wrong with Jessie. True, Jessie was like a sister in so many ways it was hard to tell the difference. But Lana had once truly liked Jessie. Much more than she was willing to admit. But their unbelievably awesome friendship stopped her from saying anything to Jessie. She was afraid to tell her and eventually she had just forgotten she had ever wanted her. Lana was never one to pine after someone she couldn't have.
The kiss. Oh my god the kiss. Lana had buried that side of her for so long that when she kissed Jessie she felt this flood of emotion and pure and simple lust. It was confusing and she couldn't help but wonder if the lust had been brought on by lack of sex for so many years or something more. It was just a mess and she was scared to see Jessie until she had it sorted out in her head. So she went to the only place that Jessie would never look for her, the library.
Lana walked into the library and went straight to the poetry section. She looked for the darkest poet she could think of in hopes of clearing her mind and all she could think of was Sylvia Plath. She grabbed a book of her collected works and sat down at a desk in the corner of the library. She quickly became engrossed in her book and didn't notice the approaching footsteps.
"Hey. Whatcha reading?" Anna asked and sat down at the table with her. Lana struggled to smile as she looked up at her.
"Sylvia Plath." She smiled weakly and looked down at her book again. Anna laughed.
"Girl who killed herself by sticking her head in the oven?" Lana looked up annoyed at the intrusion.
"Yeah that's the one." Lana bit the inside of her cheek to keep from saying to fuck off.
"Morbid. But good." She glanced at the book and then back to Lana. "Listen. I know that there is some kind of hostility between us. Most likely because both of us want to get a certain girl named Jessie. I just want to put it out there. I don't want us to not be friends because of it. I mean. I know that you are this notorious player in your small town. But I am not looking to just get into Jessie's pants. Know that. And I don't know what your intentions are there, but mine are nothing but noble." Lana frowned at Anna's blatant honesty. She couldn't seem to fully understand Anna like she was able to understand most women. Her actions and words were conflicting. She didn't seem malicious or cruel, just a little off. Either way, she wasn't sure she wanted Anna to date her friend. But she couldn't put her finger on the real reason just yet. Was it because she wanted Jessie to herself or because she just didn't trust her? She sighed heavily.
"You can do whatever you like. It's your life. I am just saying that Jessie isn't stupid enough to fall for stupid lines and come ons. I have known her a very long time and this is me, throwing down the gauntlet. May the best girl win. And by that I mean me." Lana said with a smile and picked up her books and walked away from Anna confused face. Lana grunted. She can't believe that had just happened. Fuck. She needed to talk to Jessie and settle this up. She could bet on her life that the kiss they shared was not just any fake kiss. But Lana wasn't sure if she wanted more than just friendship from Jessie. She couldn't help but wonder if it would be awkward and this huge mistake. Lana wracked her brain as she walked quickly down the hall to distance herself from Anna. What she needed was a visit to her best guy friend, Jake. And maybe a little visit from Mary Jane. She smiled to herself and proceeded down the hall to her room.
