"Come on, Maddie." I grabbed her hand, and quickly dragged her out of the Tea Leaf. "Let's get you out of here."
There was a whole different side to Maddie, she wasn't the strong, brave leader she portrayed, she had a softer side to her. This was her weakness, the murder of the guy she loved. I dragged her to my car and helped her stay steady because of all her tears clouding her vision. "Where's your car?"
"I took a taxi." She sighed.
"Come, let's go to my house and get you all washed up."
Once we had gotten to my house, I helped her wipe off her mascara. Her crying had slowed, but not fully stopped. "God, I'm such a bad person."
"Shh, it's okay." I carefully stroked her hair. I opened my bed sheets and let Maddie climb in so she could get some rest. "Get some sleep, Mads, you need some rest." After a few minutes, Maddie had finally fallen asleep. I had decided to get something to eat and wait for Maddie to wake up, so I grabbed a bowl of cereal and headed back up to my room and sank into my small couch and went on my laptop to get some writing done.
"This is so unreal," I whispered softly to myself. "This is like a dramatic TV show where there's a plot twist every five seconds." I sighed, glancing over at a peaceful, sleeping Maddie.
I decided I was tired too, so I ended up falling asleep myself.
I woke up with a blanket tossed around me, and my neck in an uncomfortable, bent position, because the couch was too small for me to stretch out my entire body. My neck was bent and my feet were dangling over the side. "Ow." I rubbed my neck.
"Hello, sleepyhead." Maddie said, smiling slightly.
"What year is it?" I rubbed my eyes, adjusting to the sunlight.
"Hmm, last time I checked, it was 2037." She chuckled. "Thank you for letting me pass out on your bed, that was a much needed nap."
"You can come over and nap whenever you want, if that's what you need." I smiled, then got up from my bent position on the couch. "You hungry? I was thinking about ordering a pizza."
"Sure."
Maddie and I spent the rest of the day together, eating pizza, sharing secrets, and binging down any interesting TV show we could find. It was night and Maddie had already fallen asleep.
My mom knew that Maddie was here and she felt bad because she walked in crying, so she let her stay for a while. She peeked her head into my room. "Lani?" She whispered.
"Yeah, mom?" She motioned for me to come out in the hallway. I obediently went with her and she led me downstairs into the kitchen, the whisper in her voice never rising.
"Did she tell you the... story?" She said, glancing at the top of the stairs every few minutes.
I nod, wondering where she was going with this.
"Did she tell you about the part where she went, like, a few blocks away, just so the body wasn't found near her house?"
I nod, getting a small idea of where she's going with it. "Oh, God." I rest my forehead in the palms of my hands.
"Lani, I watched her kill someone right outside of our window... and guess who got arrested for it."
Tears filled my eyes. "Dad."
