"I'm sorry, K." My mom rubbed my shoulder and my face was still in my palms. "It's just... I told you to stay away."
"Mom, she felt terrible... why do you think she was walking around looking like a zombie apocalypse?" I said.
"She could just as easily be lying, Lani."
"You can't force emotion like that."
"You can if you're an actress." My mom said.
"Mom, she is asleep in my room, can she stay the night?" I sighed, trying to process everything. "Oh God, Mom. Paige, Brooke, and Maddie are in the same friend group and they think my dad murdered their brother!" I whispered. "This is..."
"She lives alone, Kalani, what if her mother calls and no one picks up?"
"Her mother and her are in a huge argument."
"What about her dad?"
"Her dad died of cancer a few years ago."
"Fine. One night. That is all."
Come to think of it, Paige had never really talked to me. We've never been alone in the same room together, we've never even talked too much. I have caught a few nasty glares here and there, but never mentioned it, because I never really knew why. I thought maybe she hated me because I was almost getting all of the attention.
The next morning, Maddie was already awake and was sitting on my couch, looking at a photo of baby me on my dresser. "Oh, Kalani! You're awake. Sorry, I hope you don't mind-"
"Not at all." I smiled.
"Is this you?" She smiled back, pointing to the picture.
"Yeah. It's me, my mom, and... my dad." I sighed, looking down.
"What happened to your dad, if you don't mind me asking?" She looked at me, clueless.
"Y-you really don't know?" Tears filled my eyes.
She nods no, her brows furrowing.
I kept looking down, never meeting her gaze. "He was arrested for the murder of Josh Hyland."
