We sat awkwardly in silence. Ian balled his hands into fists and I placed one of my hands in his. "I know how awkward this must seem but I need you guys to get along."

"Fuck this shit." Ian took a breath.
"Gale, I'm only doing this because your sister still thinks there is some good in you."

"There is," I told him.

I smiled at Gale and surprisingly he smile back.
"Cari, I love you but this isn't going to work."

I nodded and sighed. I felt the weight in the couch shift to my end and I saw Adrian take out a chess set from under the sofa.

He shook the box and directed Gale's attention. "You play chess?"

I grinned and chuckled as Ian tried every possible way to beat my bro. He only won once when playing slap Jack but every other game he lost.

"Ian, you suck."

"S-Shut up! My girlfriend is being mean to me."

"Hah. Try a little harder and then I'll think about cheering you on."

"But I am trying!"

"*cough* then you suck *cough*"
We both looked over at Gale who had his fist to his mouth, trying not to laugh.

I tried to hold in my giggling too and eventually the whole room was filled with our guffaws.
"Oh man! I didn't know Gale has a sense of humor."

"Well I do. Anyhow," he spoke, picking him self up. "I have to get going. I already have a new job and can't be late."

"Wow, okay. Good luck." Surprisingly, this came from Ian's mouth.

Gale nodded and walked out the door, then shutting it behind him.

"Thanks Ian. For giving my brother a chance."

"Yeah," he spoke. "I wish you hadn't given my bro a chance, though."
"Yeah, well he's in jail so he cant bother us anymore."

"Yeah," he yawned and looped an arm around my shoulder.
I immediately went red and Adrian looked worried.

"Are you sick?"

"Maybe. Can you get me some water?" He nodded and went to the kitchen.

Stupid Cari. This is a couples thing. Just be normal.

Ian came back and handed me a glass. I drank the water and sighed. "Okay, do it."

"Do what?" He asked as he went to wash my glass.
I followed him. "Whatever you were doing before. Like we were what, cuddling?"

"Is that weird to you?"

"Well a little! I don't know how to be a girlfriend, okay?!"
I groaned and leaned against the counter.

Ian walked in front of me and placed his hand on my shoulder. "I can be a good boyfriend though. Then it'll work out. I'll teach you."

"Why does that sound like a bad thing"

"I dunno."

We walked over to the couch and sat there in silence. It was nice, just as two people in peace and serenity.

"Ian."
"What?"
"You're stupid."
"Oh."

I laughed a little.

"Hey Ri?"
"Yeah?"
"You're dumb."
"Oh."

We both laughed then and sighed in unison.
"This is weird."

"Yeah," I agreed.

"We should do it more often."

"Never again."

"Joking, joking."

He sighed. "Never again... Hey Ri?"

I looked over at him and he lightly pecked my lips.

I stared at him for a few seconds before blushing like mad. "Jeez, Ri! I'm dating you, calm down."

"Ugh, I don't feel well."

"I can see that." He propped his head on my shoulder. "You're short."

"Shut up."

"It's cute."

"... I will poke your eyes out."

"Well, you're a natural at flirting."

I laughed. "I know."

We stayed like that for a few minutes before Ian was given a punch in the arm.

"Ow," he laughed. "Why'd you do that?"

"You kissed my neck. That should be illegal."

"Well it's not~"

"Why is my boyfriend a weirdo?"

"I can say that about my girlfriend too."

"Dyllon would probably punch you too, ya know."

I immediately regretted the words that came out of my mouth.
"...I-"

"Nuh uh."

"But-"

"Nope."

Ian kissed my forehead. "He would be counting the number fights we had, most likely. Then calculating the percentage that would be us staying together."

"Hopefully it's a while."

"Hopefully it's forever. You want to walk by the beach?"

I nodded. We both put on flip-flops and started our way by the shore.

"Remember I found you here. Hey, can you still so that thing with the mermaid tail?"

"Yep. I did it to find my brother. And it's already dark."
I pointed up at the sky.

"I dont care. The best place to see the stars are here at the beach."

I looked up and saw the twinkling lights stringing themselves across the sky.

I smiled to myself. "Hey Ian?"

"Huh?"
I kissed his cheek and sat down in the sand.

"I love you?"
"Why does that sound like a question?"
"Why is your life a question?"
"That doesn't make sense."
"I know."

Adrian sat besides me and laid down.
"'I love you?' too," he joked.

I rolled my eyes and looked down at the sand.
My hand touched something and I picked up a perfectly crafted shell.

Kind of like the necklace Dyllon gave me.
I held it up against the sky.

Wherever you are Dyl, I hope you're happy.

I laid back next to Ian and snuggled besides him.

"Ian."
"Yeah?"

"I don't love you, I just really like you."

I could sense the rolling of his eyes.
"Same Ri."

He sighed and looked over at me.
"Same."
