I toss and turn, unable to fall asleep. I have that feeling that someone's watching me. Maybe.... it's just my imagination. I hear my window open again. I roll my eyes and sit up, flicking the light switch beside my bed.
"Josh..?"
"Hi um... I'm kind of in trouble so can I stay here for a while..?"
"Sure I don't see why not."
"Thanks."
I examine the shirtless boy that had just came into my room. He was wearing a red snap-back that said L.A. on the front, his neon yellow hair showing just a bit. He has a sleeve on his right arm, a tree, a galaxy, and a sunset. He has multiple smaller ones on his left arm. He has on a pair of sweatpants that were low on his hips.
"You just gonna stare at me?"
I blush and look down.
"Sorry I um...."
He laughs.
"It's fine Tyler. By the way, you're even cuter in person."
I blush harder.
"Stoooooopppppp."
Josh sits beside me, taking out his phone. Ding. I check my phone. Brendon texted me.
"Josh is at your house isn't he?"
"Yeah why?"
"He said he was in trouble didn't he?"
"Yeah why?"
"Damnit Tyler. I'm on my way to your house. Don't. Move. From. That. Spot."
"Okay..?"
I could feel Josh looking at me.
"What is it Josh..?"
"You have a funny look on your face. Almost as if your... scared..."
I tense as he puts his hand on my knee.
"I'm fine Josh."
"No your not. What are you afraid of Tyler?"
"I can answer that in multiple ways."
"Well, give me an answer."
"Death. I'm scared of death."
"Why?"
"Because. No one knows what happens when we die. One person says you go to heaven one person says you go to hell one person says both and another person says you get reincarnated."
I take in a breath after speaking. Josh wraps his arm around my shoulders and pulls me into him.
"Dean is inevitable. That's true. No one knows what happens when we die. That's also true. But Ty, you've just gotta live for the moment. Don't worry about death until it's your turn. Don't worry about any of that until it's your turn to be buried six feet under."
I let the words that Josh spoke soak in.
I hear my window open again. Brendon walks in, a gun pointed at Josh. He raises his hands up and stands.
"Don't know what I did to you but okay just don't shoot me."
"What do you want from Tyler, Josh."
"I don't want anything from him. I just want to be his friend."
"That's EXACTLY what you said to Ryan."
"Well I was stupid back then."
"Back three months ago."
I tremble as I listen to the two. Thankfully my parents had gone out and my siblings weren't at home either. They start yelling at one another.
"Okay stop!"
I stand up and walk over to Brendon, taking the gun and putting it on safety. I put it in a drawer of mine and walk back over to the two.
"What ever happened between you two is in the past. Let it go and move on."
"I can't just let this go Tyler."
I groan and sit down on the floor.
"Brennnnndonnnnn."
Josh just stands, his gaze going from me to Brendon. I watch as Brendon sits on my bed. I stand and look at the windows sill. I cock my head to the left.
"The window sill looks really nice, right?"
"What?"
I turn to face Brendon.
"Nothing."
I step out and walk down the platform and down the stairs outside of my room. I hear Josh or Brendon following me.
"You think twice about your life it probably happens at night right?"
I go to the treehouse in the forest behind my home.
"Tyler what the hell are you doing?"
"I'm getting away Brendon. I'm getting away."
"From what?"
"From home. From the chaos that just happened."
I hear who I thought was Brendon walk up the ladder. But to my surprise, it's Josh. He sighs and sits beside me as Brendon climbs up after him. Josh rests his head on my shoulder and reaches for my hand. I take it but look at Brendon in confusion. He just shrugs and pulls out a cigarette.
"Be careful with that Beebo."
"Oh shut it Ty."
I laugh. Josh lifts his head up and lets go of my hand, wrapping his arm around my waist, lifting my shirt up a little so that his hand was touching my skin. I blush as Brendon let's a puff of smoke escape his lips.
"Hey Tyler. You should let Josh hear you sing."
"Brendon..."
"C'mon Ty. It's been a while anyway."
"Okay..."
I look at the old ukulele in the corner. I grab it and blow off the dust. I strum it gently.
"Still sounds the same."
I smile, remembering the day I played a song for my mum. It was her 23d birthday. I wrote her a song I now call House Of Gold. I start playing the chords softly. I smile as the lyrics escape my lips.
"Let's say we up and left this town... and turned our future upside down... we'll make pretend that you and me... lived ever after happily..."
I smile the biggest smile that I've ever smiled in a long time. I finish the song and laugh.
"Didn't plan on playing that one did you Ty?"
"Nope."
I set the ukulele back down as Josh pulls me towards him.
"That was amazing Ty."
I blush. Brendon looks at me. I can tell he's not comfortable with me being around Josh. I give him a reassuring look.
"Oh hey it's the sun."
I look out of the small window to see the sunrise. I think about something that someone told me once. I used it in a song I wrote called Truce.
"The sun will rise and we will try again."
"Truce?"
"I'm not singing you idiot."
I laugh at Brendon. I didn't know though, that soon, I would be singing.
And not just for two people.
