AMANDA
"Congratulations class of 2017 you've finally graduated. Go out and make your mark on the world."
I drown out of the rest of the corny ending speech to this over long graduation ceremony that didn't really need all the fuss and hype the university threw at it and at us in return. All we did in these nearly three hours was sit in uncomfortable chairs and listen to speaker after speaker drone on about how we were the future of this country, and then we got called on stage one by one to be handed our diploma and shake some old dude's hand.
Next, to me, my best friend and partner in crime Ashley nudges me quite hard in the side, "sit up straight Amanda, and stop slouching."
I roll my eyes and sit up straight, "you're not my mother Ash, come on even you've got to admit this is boring."
She hushes me and goes back to paying the speaker her full attention.
Don't get me wrong I'd loved my three years studying Film, they were some of the best years of my life but now I was bitter it all had to end and I was being made to rejoin the normal world of 9-5 everything. If I could stay I would but at the end of the month the tenancy on mine and Ashley's shitty flat in Manchester was up and we had to move on.
Ashley already had a job right out of university working for a pretty major film production company in London, where as I had no job prospects despite my glowing portfolio. I didn't want to rain on my friend's parade but I heard down the gossip vine that she kind of got the job because someone in her family is a friend of a friend at the production company. It was basically the 'it's who you know' system instead of genuine hard work.
All around me students stand up and start clapping, so I stand up and fake clap along with them even faking a smile when Ashley looked over at me.
After the ceremony, Ashley and I made our way through the crowd of gushing and proud parents trying to find hers. Her mum was wearing a ridiculous side hat thing that you really only saw on posh women at the horse races.
"I'm so proud of my little girl."
I laugh as Ashley's fully engulfed by her mum while her dad stands behind her grinning.
"Congratulations Amanda."
"Thanks, Paul, I can't believe the three years are already over."
Her dad offers me his hand and I shake it, out of the two parents he liked me more because I was able to rein Ashley in and keep her normal while her mum wanted everyone to know they came from money and had all the nice things.
Sighing, I look around the smiling families and feel myself well up slightly. My parents weren't here; in fact, none of my family was here to celebrate this day with me and my achievement of graduating with a first class degree with honours. That was because my parents and older brother were dead, and had been since I was sixteen.
"Ashley I think I'm going to head back to the flat and get out of this gear."
Ashley pouts, "come out for food with my folks, they won't mind one little bit because they know you mean the world to me and today is hard for you."
I loved Ashley to pieces but she was the bluntest person I'd ever had the privilege of meeting. She had no filter, which was funny most times but on days like this, I didn't need it rubbed in my face even unintentionally that I had no family to celebrate with.
"I'm good but thanks for the offer, have a nice meal and I'll see you back at the flat later."
She doesn't need to be told twice before she links arms with her parents and walks away from me leaving me in the swarm of blue graduation gowns and caps.
Taking off my own cap I shuffle towards the nearby taxi rank and luckily get into the first taxi. The driver looks me over as if he wants to ask me how graduation went but somehow can sense I'm not in the mood to make conversation.
"Where to?"
I give him the flat address and we morph into the traffic leaving my graduation and university life behind me.
~Skip Taxi Ride~
Nodding at the doorman I wait patiently for the lift having taken off my blue gown in the taxi after feeling like I was suffocating. The lift comes swiftly and I stand in silence contemplating life as it takes me to the fifth floor.
Inside the flat, I immediately head into my room and change into something more comfortable, joggers and an oversized ripped jumper. It was moments like these I craved when I had the place to myself.
Flopping down on the sofa I open my laptop and scroll through my emails hoping and praying at least one application I sent out had been successful. There were plenty of nicely worded rejection letters, stating I either had too much or too little experience. I really needed a job by the end of the month, so two weeks of job hunting start right now. well, it could wait, I mean I'd just graduated and deserved some quality YouTube time.
~Night~
"AMANDA WAKE UP!"
I jolt upright hearing Ashley scream in my ear nearly deafening me in the process. I must have fallen asleep watching my subscription box like I usually did. Ashley pushes me aside and sits cross legged staring at me quite maniacally if I may add.
"Why did you need to shout?"
"You could have been dead or something Amanda. Now, do you want to hear some good news about a potential job?"
At the mention of the word job my ears perk up, "what job?"
Ashley rolls her eyes and opens her phone before shoving it in my face. After my eyes adjust and I hold the screen a safe distance from my face and take in what was on the screen.
"Pewdiepie is looking for a production assistant to help with his videos and channel. You should totally apply Amanda, you love YouTube and meet all the criteria."
I snort, "This has to be some sort of joke Ash, and this isn't real. I'm going to bed."
Handing her the phone back I grab my laptop and reluctantly get off the sofa and head to bed.
