24. Bad blood

My hazing team and I have been sitting at the gym's polished floor with bowed heads and sweaty palms, as we wait for the arrival of our juniors fifteen minutes from now. No one of us knows how we would convey the decision of the admin to them for we are all feeling blue. We tried to talk to them, however they wouldn't hear us out. They have made their decision. They want to abolish our SOTUS system. It happened when someone had leaked the unfortunate event occurred with P'Tae and N'Mingkwan when it supposed to be within our faculty only. It made the parents ballistic and as one of the partners of school, they couldn't ignore their demand.

"How can we tell those juniors? I met some of them at the cafeteria and they are so excited for the flag capturing event. The first time I have encountered it. Usually, freshmen weren't looking forward to that event. But this new batch... they are different. They might be impudent in the beginning, but they have embraced it headlong. How can we shatter their hopes of that day? Just giving their gear bracelet isn't the same as undergoing the process. It will lose its meaning!" P'Run, a member of the hazing team, grumbles.

"Tsk! They just become excited with our every activity because of N'Forth," P'Shone jokes. "They are all here to see him. Even the time he wasn't yet replacing Tae, those freshmen's eyes were all in him. That's why we always put him beside Tae to make it look like they're listening to him. But in reality, they're gazing at this handsome bastard." He even taps my shoulder.

I am aware of it. They used to tease me about it every after our activity. They also said that if I weren't part of the group, there wouldn't be freshmen to attend sotus because P'Tae was just too harsh. We can't blame him for there were some head hazers who were cruel than him. It's their way of intimidating them to instill their authority. Others might be jerking their brows at that idea, even I didn't agree with it, however showing your soft side isn't a great idea. There's a tendency that they would not take you seriously. P'Tae just overdid his power.

When I become the head hazer, in nominations of the others though I am a year younger than most of the members of hazing team, I have to show my forbidding side. However, I don't get it why some of them, especially women, would find it charming. In a good way, they tend to follow my orders and believe whatever I say. On the other side, they tend to be clingy with me. Sometimes, I'm thinking of being violent as P'Tae so they would stop their ridiculous acts...

We are still in the midst of desolation while waiting for the juniors when a cheerful voice has snapped as out of our reverie.

"P'Forth!!" N'Dream calls as she limps on my way. "I have good news! I have talked to my uncle!"

I stand up to meet and support her (she's still injured yet she's walking around like that!), then the others scamper, too, once they heard the director's name who's fortunately to be N'Dream's uncle.

"What did he say, N'Dream? Tell us," P'Run hurriedly asks the moment they reach her.

"He gives us a chance to keep our sotus system," she happily announces that makes us all gape at her, so she continues, "he knows that it's a tradition built for years. He couldn't even imagine the faculty of engineering without its sotus, therefore he allows us to continue it in one condition... the thing which happened between P'Tae and Ming must not occur again, or else it would really be the end of it."

We're silent for a moment; processing every word of what she said until P'Shone yelps in happiness then gently squeezes N'Dream. Everyone else follows, so I have to let go of her. She is mobbed by the hazing team. Meanwhile, I'm just happy to know that this isn't the end of the tradition we've been holding in our hearts.

"Hey, Forth! Aren't you giving N'Dream a big hug? She's the reason why we remain."

"Eh? P, it's not only because of me. I know how important sotus is for our faculty. I just tried to help. I don't want it to end in our batch," she coyly says while glancing at my direction.
