Chapter 3
I couldn't breathe. My ex-BFF, Serena Anderson, was standing right in front of me. “Kylie.” She said, nodding at me. “Serena.” I answered stiffly, looking down. Holly and Mina stared at me, and while Serena glanced around, I mouthed. “Bitch.” They nodded, understanding me, while Holly mouthed. “Want us to stay?” I shook my head, “No, I’m fine.” I mouthed back. I knew that this was going to get way too bitchy, way too fast. "We're going to get our schedules, okay Kylie?" Holly said to me. I nodded. "We'll get yours, too!" Mina piped up. I smiled at her. "Thanks girls. I'll see you later." They headed inside the building. As soon as they were gone, Serena seemed to relax a little.
“So... What you were talking about earlier? Your mommy and daddy don't know what?” I rolled my eyes. She was too nosy for her own good. “Nothing, Serena. You really haven't changed a bit, have you?” I sighed, exasperated. “No, but you have. You've only gotten uglier.” She said nonchalantly, as if she were inviting someone to dinner. I gasped in surprise of the bitchiness of her comment, and she smirked. “Better than putting on 20 pounds every second.” I retorted with a meaningful glance at her figure. I looked over at Xavier, who had caught my eye. I sent him a slightly panicked glance, and then he stared heading over to where we were. Clearly concerned, nevertheless.
Serena followed my gaze, and when her eyes landed on Xavier, she flipped her hair back, and then shot a glance at me. “Total Hottie alert.” She gave me a sideways look, her eyes narrowed, lips pursed as if to say “He's mine.” I held back laughter; she clearly knew nothing about Xavier. What she was going to do next, I would have never anticipated it. She pulled put a tube of lipstick from her Gucci purse, applied some, then sashayed right up to him.
“Hey sexy. My name's Serena Anderson. What's your name?” She purred, leaning close to him. He took a step back, nervously, and then answered her. “Xavier Stephenson.” He held out his hand so she could shake it, but she ignored his hand stepped beside him, her arm snaking around his waist. She leaned in and whispered in his ear. I inched closer so I could hear them. “Wanna go out with me?” I saw him frown, peeling her off of him. He hated girls like Serena; I knew that better than anyone. “Serena, I already have a girlfriend.” He said. “Hmm?” She said. “I have a girlfriend.” Xavier repeated.
“But she’s not here right now, is she?” Serena cooed. “Actually…” Xavier smiled. “She is.” He smiled at me. Serena didn’t notice the smile he gave me, so she continued on, oblivious. “Oh, really?” She said, looking around. "Where is she? Who is she?" Xavier stared at her. I smirked. Wow, what an airhead. To answer her question, Xavier walked up to me and wrapped his arm around my waist. I smiled up at him, and he smiled right back. "Kylie's my girlfriend." She stared at us, obviously shocked. "What? You two are together? But she's so ugly! And a nerd!" I gasped, and then looked up at Xavier, anticipating his reaction. "Are you kidding me?!" He said angrily.
"Serena, I'd pick her over you any day! I wouldn't date you even if you were the last girl on earth!" I smiled up at him, unsure though, because he hadn't exactly denied the fact that I was ugly and a nerd....But I'd take that into consideration later. "Fine, whatever." Serena huffed. "There are tons of other hot guys in this school anyways." She was obviously bluffing, I could tell. Xavier was obviously the hottest guy in our grade, if not the whole school. And Xavier was all mine...At least I hoped so. Serena walked away, probably seeing that there was no way she was going to win this one... Or not.
I thought as I saw her walk up to Tyler, the second most popular guy in our school. He was an arrogant jerk, but Serena didn't seem to think so. I watched as she sashayed up to him and kissed him full on the lips. I turned away, stunned. Xavier smirked and looked at me. "Well, she certainly moves on fast." He joked. "Yeah, babe thanks for saving me there." I smiled at him and pecked him on the lips lightly. "No problem." I felt him smile against my lips. I hugged him tightly, and he kissed the top of my head. She'll be back, though. I knew it in my gut. "Xavier?" I asked him. "Yeah, Kyles?" He asked me. "She'll..." I paused.
"I have a feeling that she'll be back, try to break us apart." I buried my face into his chest, inhaling his cologne. "Don't worry babe, I won't let that happen." He said to me, and then kissed me on the cheek. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Holly and Mina returning with my schedule. I checked the time on my phone: 7:25. "We'd better get moving." I said to Xavier, pulling him towards the entrance. I met up with my friends and they handed me my schedule. "Ready to go?" Holly asked me. I looked at Xavier, and he wrapped his arm around my shoulder. With a sudden burst of confidence, I took a step forward. "Ready as I'll ever be."
