Chapter 11

After a few hours of being wrapped up in his embrace, I sit up. He looks at me questioningly, then follows suit. “Tell me about yourself.” I say randomly, fiddling with my hair. I catch him off guard. “W-what?” He asks me, startled. “Tell me about yourself.” I repeat, staring at him like he had two heads. “You know, about your family, your siblings… funny stories. All of that stuff.” He nods his head.

“Okay…” He starts, eyeing me reluctantly. “My dad’s an electrician, and I have two younger sisters.” I smile encouragingly for him to go on. “And my mom… She died when I was 10.” He mumbles the last part, not meeting my eyes. I gasp, then re- compose myself. “Omigod.” I lean over to him, awkwardly patting his shoulder. “I’m sorry.” I continue, at a loss for words. But, you can’t exactly blame, because-hey, I’ve never had a family member die! Pets, sure, the occasional decapitating of a spider’s head, of course… but never had I had a family member, certainly not someone as close to my heart as my immediate family, pass away. “It’s not your fault.” He whispers quietly.

Even in such a low tone, his voice cracks, and upon further inspection, I can see that his eyes are misting up. “But it still matters…” I whisper quietly, hugging him. We sit there for a moment, embracing, until he pulls away. “Thanks.” He says, his voice coming out hoarse and raspy. “Excuse me.” He gets up and walks down to the lower part of the boat. I watch him leave, then pull out my cell phone and turn it on.

17 missed messages

I sigh as the screen flashes. It looks like I have 7 messages from Xavier, 2 messages from Holly, 3 messages from Mina, and 5 messages from my dad. I don’t bother opening the messages from Xavier, just automatically blocking his number and deleting all of his texts, the ones from Mina and Holly are just things saying stuff like, ‘Are you mad? Please don’t be mad! I hope you’re not mad at us!’ They’re just the usual messages that I get after we’ve had a fight. Then, I move on to the 5 messages from my dad. All of them saying things like  ‘When do you want me to pick you up? Where are you?’ I reply to my dad’s texts, saying:

Hey Dad! I’m at the docks, we walked… Pick me up at…

I checked my watch, and noticed that it read 5:15. Wow! Time goes by so fast!!

Pick me up at 5:50, from the docks, please.

I finish my message, then hit send. I shove my phone back into my purse, then walk decide to walk around the boat a little, in search of Trey. I walk down to the bottom section of the boat, and come across a little living room, of all sorts. To the right, I see a little bedroom, straight ahead, the kitchen, and to the left, a closed door.  That’s probably the bathroom. I sit down on the couch in the mini sized living room, and pull out my Ipod. I play a couple of games, then stop when I see that it's already 5:30. Seriously? 15 minutes in the bathroom? I get up from my cozy spot, then head over to the bathroom. I hear a sob, then a shaking of a bottle. "Trey?" I call. No answer. More shuffling comes from inside the bathroom, followed by a sob.

"Trey!" I yell banging on the door frantically. I end up shoving myself over and over against the locked door, when the lock snaps and it finally swings open. I can't bear the scene that my eyes take in. Trey, curled up in a ball, huddling in the corner of the bathroom. "Oh, Trey." I mutter, then walk over to him and wrap my arms around him. "I'm so sorry..." I whisper, hugging him tightly. He sniffs, then sighs, and that's when I realize that he isn't crying at all. Probably just lost in his thoughts. "It was June 1st..." He tells me, in a mystical voice. I'm afraid that he isn't all here... "My mom, she was driving home. It was raining hard, and I was in the car with her. I was only 10, and I wanted her to see my new truck that I had bought. I didn't realize just how dangerous that would be, shoving my new truck in her face, blocking her sight of the road..." He trails off again."Pathetic, huh?"
