Chapter 9
Omigod! What if I spill something on myself? What if I say something stupid? What if he thinks that I’m a freak? Are my teeth clean? Are my clothes to slutty? Worried thoughts swam through my mind as I rode in the car on my way to Starbucks. I sent Trey a quick text, telling him that I’d be there soon. He replied a few seconds later, telling me that he was already there. I sighed in frustration. Would this stupid traffic ever let up? I mean, Starbucks was only 10 minutes away from our house, for God’s sake! Well, barely 10 minutes, more like 9 minutes and 45 seconds, on a good day. It made perfect sense though, because we lived in one of the busiest areas in town. “Come on… come on.” I muttered, tapping on the window with my manicured nails. Yeah, I had actually painted my nails before going to see him, because well, you have to make second impressions count, right? Or was it first impressions? Something like that.
I sighed again, and then double checked what I had in my bag. Cell phone, IPod, earphones…What was I forgetting? “I want you home by 6, no later than that. I want you to leave your cell phone on, and always have some pocket money on you.” I snapped my fingers, suddenly remembering. “My pocket money! That’s what I forgot!” I explained to my dad, smiling sheepishly. He pulled out a crisp twenty dollar bill. “This should last you the whole week, okay?” He told me. “Yes daddy.” I said, smiling up at him obediently. He smiles at me then ruffles my hair. I scowl, leaning as far away from him as I possibly can. “DAD!” I complain, trying to fix my hair again. “What?” My dad asks innocently, staring ahead at the road.
I can’t help but smile. My dad is so weird sometimes! We finally pull up to Starbucks, (the ride took 5 minutes longer than usual) and I dart inside, sparing my father a quick glance and a wave. As I enter, I’m immediately hit with the scent of fresh- baked goods, every type that you could imagine! Scones, cookies, donuts… all giving off a little-more-than-heavenly scent. Then I sense another delicious scent, well, what other than COFFEE! The scents from all of the lattes, mochas, decafs and just-your-average-coffee fill the air, hitting me full force, leaving me a little overwhelmed. I scan the little coffee shop, looking for a familiar face. “Kylie!” Someone calls. I whip my head around, searching for the person that called my name. “Over here!”
The person shouts again, and I sigh when I realize who it is. Xavier and Serena. I stride over to them, my discomfort in seeing them clear on my face. “What do you want?” I spit out, glaring at them. Serena shrinks back and takes Xavier’s hand. That bitch! Flaunting her love life in my face. “Kyles, look! Please don’t be mad.” Xavier says worriedly, noticing my balled-up fists. I force laughter, but instead of coming out happy and sweet, it’s sarcastic and biting. He flinches, and I smirk. Good. It’s nice to finally have him be the guilty one. “How the hell can I not be mad?” I practically yell, receiving dirty looks from people at nearby tables. “Mind your own goddamn business!” I snap through gritted teeth, my eyes flaming with fury. “Kylie…?” A hesitant voice says from behind me, tapping me on the shoulder. I whirl around, meeting the chocolate brown eyes that, even if I had only met him less than an hour ago, were permanently etched into my mind.
“Trey.” I breathe, my voice sounding raspy and harsh, hardly like my own. “Are you okay?” He asks, clutching my hand. I jump slightly at the touch, “Yeah, I’m fine.” I say. I force a smile, and with one last weakening glance over my shoulder, I saunter away, Trey at my side. When we near the drink counter, I sigh and look at Trey. “Um, I’m actually not that thirsty or anything.” I explain, my eyes purposely not meeting his. “Oh, yeah, well, um…” He trails off awkwardly. Clearing his throat and gathering his bearings, he starts again. “That’s fine.” He says, patting my shoulder understandingly. “But you still owe me an explanation about what happened back there.” He stares at me, jerking his thumb in Xavier’s direction. “So, let’s go to the docks, shall we?” I open the door for him, purposefully avoiding both his questions and his gaze. I will tell him, maybe. I’ll tell him later, I promise myself. Later, definitely.
