Twenty Three

"MAX?!?" David screamed.

"Yes!" Max yelled back.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

Max looked at the ground.

"I don't want to talk about it..." He said.

"Well you're gonna! Max... You don't need to hide everything. Tell us please." David held his shoulders and stared deep into his bright green eyes.

"After our fight I thought you wouldn't want to adopt me..." Max fell and started to cry.

"You want me to adopt you?" David was in shock.

"Ever since I came here... They hurt me... When they died I had no sadness... But I needed someone to take care of me... I can admit that." Max said quietly.

"Max..." David said before giving him a huge hug.

I joined in and felt the tears of the boys in my arms.

"How did you get here? I asked Max.

"I ran. I didn't know where to go but I found this lake." He said, wiping away tears.

"Aw buddy. You don't need to run away. Just talk to me." David said, giving him another hug.

"You can talk to me too." I told him.

"But... Why would you care?" Max asked us.

"Because we're your dads." Me and David said in unison.

Max smiled and when we sat down Max laid his head on David's knee and fell asleep.

"It is a nice lake." David said to me.

"It sure is." I said before giving him a kiss.
