There aren't enough superhero AU's in my opinion. I love comics. So, here's a little one-shot that kinda begins the whole thing. There's not much puzzleshipping, but I'll definitely be continuing this at some point. I have a lot of ideas for this.
It was the cackling that almost made Atemu snap.
That same damn cackle that he heard hundreds of times before. It was nasally and made the person's body convulse and was far too forced to be intimidating. But judging from the quivering and whimpers from the people around him, it achieved its intended purpose.
"Come on, Yami!" The man in the room screeched. He was speaking to a phone he held away from himself, broadcasting and live streaming across every television in the country while helicopters and police surrounded the building outside. In his other hand was what looked like a gun, but Atemu knew that it did more than just shoot bullets. The man grinned maniacally. "Are you afraid, Yami? Afraid I'll win?"
'Hardly,' Atemu thought, scowling when the man turned his back. 'Just didn't expect you to strike while I was trying to make a deposit, you ass.' Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted one of the bankers wiping away tears.
"I-I think he said he was going overseas for a while," Atemu offered, sounding timid as to not cause suspicion. The villain turned to him dramatically and Atemu forced himself to flinch and look smaller.
"You-" He pointed his gun at Atemu. "Shut your damn mouth! I would know where he is and isn't! He will come! And when he does-" He grinned, showing pearly white rows of teeth. "It's bye-bye to Domino's savior."
Atemu stayed quiet at this. Another low rate villain thinking they could take him- er, Yami, down. The gears in his mind began turning, thinking of ways he could change into his superhero alter ego without anyone seeing. Maybe after enough time had passed and the villain got antsy, he would start shooting and civilians would panic and scatter, giving Atemu his chance to escape. Or maybe the police would actually do their damn jobs instead of always relying on him to come to the rescue.
'I really need to start banking online,' Atemu thought bitterly.
Half an hour passed.
An hour.
Two hours.
The villain's face was now one of pure rage and indignation. He looked straight into the phone's camera. "You think this is funny, huh Yami?!" He screamed. Then his voice lowered dangerously. "Nobody makes a fool of me- NOBODY!" The civilians flinched as his voice echoed through the room and he shot at the roof. Debris fell onto the floor that caused some to yell in fear. "You- you think I'm nothin'? That I'm some kind a' fuckin' joke?! Huh, you bastard?!" His eyes were wide, wild and dangerous. Atemu tensed, his concern for both the man and the other people in the room was rising.
The man was suddenly quiet. "I'll show you..." He grabbed at the person closest to him.
'Fucking- awesome!' Atemu thought sarcastically when he realized he was the one being grabbed. The man held him close and aimed the gun below his chin. 'Great! This is just fan-fucking-tastic! Best day ever!'
"I'm gonna start killing, Yami." The man smiled. "Is that what you want? Oh boy, I hope you're watching. Now everyone can see how pathetic you are. Maybe this guy's family's watching! Oh, they'd love to hear why you didn't save their son, or husband, or dad or whatever."
If Atemu wasn't so focused on keeping up the scared and helpless act, he would have laughed. His family was dead, so that was nothing of concern to him. He was more worried about what he would do once the villain shot him and he would still be alive. He would get up, completely unharmed, and be forced to reveal his secret identity.
The villain was wrapping up his speech and steadied his hand. "It's all your fault, Yami," he hissed.
Atemu inwardly sighed. 'It was fun while it lasted, I guess.' He prepared himself for the blast, for the lack of holes in his chest that would cause a freak-out and take away his civilian life and put it all out on display for everyone to see.
He clenched his eyes shut at the familiar buzz of the gun.
Suddenly, there was a thunderous boom from behind him. One minute, he could feel the man's chest pressed against his face and the next, he was on the floor, watching as the man that had held him hostage collapsed onto the floor, the gun nowhere in sight. After rubbing his eyes, Atemu looked farther up when he realized there was a person standing above him.
The figure was almost completely covered, in clothes that seemed a bit too big. They wore white sweatpants and a white sweatshirt with the hood pulled over their head. Atemu furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. Then, he realized that he was actually squinting and that the person was radiating some kind of bright light.
What the actual fu-
The person turned to face him.
Is that a fucking mask?!
Atemu could see blond hairs poking out of their hood. Half of their face was covered with a cheesy masquerade ball white mask that looked like it was made out of plastic. They held out their gloved hand (the glove was also white, surprise surprise) and Atemu got a good look at their eyes. Purple? Sure, he was no one to talk about someone having oddly colored eyes, his own eyes were naturally red, hidden by brown contacts and only seen when he turned into Yami.
The light surrounding the man had died down and Atemu took the hand and stood up. The person was... smaller than him; their skin was white and their mouth was covered by a white bandana. He could feel the person's eyes roaming his figure, looking for any injury. When they found none, they let out a satisfied hum and walked to the man on the floor. They placed two fingers on the villain's neck -checking his pulse, Atemu realized- and nodded.
Atemu looked around at the others in the room who had slightly uncurled themselves from their previous positions on the floor and were looking at the person in white in awe. No one dared make a sound though.
The doors of the bank were thrown open, causing everyone to look that way. Atemu was more than surprised to see police, guns drawn and bullet proof armor on. They quickly found the villain laying unconscious on the floor and the person in white standing over them. They aimed their guns at the person cautiously and began to make their way over. Before they could, however, the person waved their hand in a slashing motion in the air in front of them. A bright light once again surrounded them, forcing everyone else to shut their eyes and the police to yell at the person to stop. But when Atemu opened his eyes once more, they were gone, a white mist swirling where the person once was before disappearing altogether.
There was commotion all around him, with the police taking the villain into custody and talking to the civilians and trying to find out who that person in white was, but Atemu only paid attention to it with half a mind.
The rest of him was brought back to the person in white that saved his secret and apparently had powers too. Back to those purple eyes that stared at him with care and softness.
The police began to walk towards him, no doubt going to ask questions about what happened.
This'll be interesting.
Spoilers: The person in white was Yugi, in case any of you were confused. Hooray for superhero AUs! I seriously love them but I know it would hardly work cuz their hair would give them away instantly. Anyways, like I said there'll be a continuation of this if you guys want it. I'm gonna go write some LMBYL now (or try to anyway).
It's almost 11 at night. I'm tired.
