"is there s-some way we c-can skip security? what if they f-find s-something weird? i c-could get jailed!" evan was freaking out through the security line because he hadn't packed his own bags, therefore he had no clue what could be in them.

connor grabbed evan's hand and rubbed it gently. "don't worry, darling. everything's going to be fine."

connor was right. security was easy to get through. now they just had to find a place to eat lunch.

they sat down at a mcdonalds because they were cheap and unhealthy. connor ordered for the both of them, knowing that evan simply couldn't, and having no problem with that whatsoever.

they ate their big macs and chicken mcnuggets in comfortable silence, sitting on one side of a booth together.
connor grabbed evan's hand and smiled. evan leaned against connor and snuck a kiss on his neck, then gazed up, admiring his soulmate.

"h-how did i get so lucky?" evan murmured, and connor smiled under evan's gaze.

"how many times do i have to tell you that i'm the lucky one?" a kiss was placed on evan's forehead, causing a smile to make its way onto evan's face.

when the food was gone, they made their way to the gate, then just sat there, talking.

"what do you miss most about your hometown?" connor questioned evan.

"w-well, there w-was this orchard there," evan began. "and i l-loved to c-climb its trees. i-it had great, b-big oaks that were so, s-so high. it w-was an amazing feeling."

connor smiled a little, knowing that the orchard was in their plans.

"what about y-you, connor? i know y-you haven't lived in n-new york all your life," evan inquired.

connor visibly cringed. "where i lived before... wasn't the best place. i mean, the neighborhood was fine and all, but the kids... were all snooty and rich and rude. i remember i was always the angry one - i threw a printer at my teacher in second grade, and at that point, i got my reputation.

"i was diagnosed with bipolar in eighth grade, and it just got worse from there. i tried to commit suicide in ninth grade. tenth grade, i was prescribed different drugs that actually started working. therapy actually started helping. eventually my dad was promoted and we moved over here. and i'm so glad i didn't die, because then i wouldn't have met you," connor finished with a smile.

evan blushed as connor picked up his hand and placed a light kiss to the back of it. their happy moment was suddenly interrupted by a woman loudly clearing her throat.

the two boys glanced in her general direction, where she was sitting with a small child. he was giggling about something on the woman's iPad, precious and adorable. but the woman herself was sending a death glare towards connor.

"could you fags stop doing that gay stuff? there are actual decent people here who want to live our meaningful lives. unlike y'all, who are obviously going straight to hell," she hissed.

connor raised his eyebrows. he watched the colors of the airport fade a little and felt evan shake with anxiety. anger rose up in connor's chest, and he was about to yell at the woman, when -

"i'm sorry, what did you just say to them?"

a teenage girl right behind them leaned forward. she had long dark blonde hair and round glasses covering blue-gray eyes, which now contained a fiery rage directed at the woman.

the woman looked shocked. "our conversation is none of your business, young lady. now go back to your starbucks and your cakey makeup."

the girl now climbed over the chairs and moved to stand right in front of the woman. "oh, right, because all i'm good for is ordering artistic lattes. you know what, ma'am? you are a disgrace to humanity."

"excuse me?!!" the woman exclaimed, drawing the attention of people nearby.

connor gathered evan in his arms and evan buried his face in connor's chest, trying to calm himself down from a near-panic attack.

"you're judging them for loving each other. girls have always been soulmates with girls and guys have always been soulmates with guys, which will never change. and applying stereotypes to someone doesn't help," the girl snapped. "you obviously have nothing better to do with your life than spread hate in a world that should be full of love. i feel bad for your adorable son, who's going to have to grow up having you as a mother. hopefully he'll be smart enough to not take your words like they were something out of jesus's mouth."

the crowd laughed, and connor laughed along, not being able to resist.

the woman placed a hand on her chest, her jaw open wide. "i...i... SECURITY!" she shrieked.

a guard came running over. "what seems to be the problem, ma'am?"

"this teenage girl who thinks she's all that and then some is harassing me! and those fags over there are being completely disgusting!" the woman whined like a toddler while her own toddler looked bewildered and confused.

"i wasn't talking to you. i was talking to this young lady, who apparently had to go through the torture of witnessing your horrible, hateful words."

connor, evan, and the girl watched in glee as the woman and her son were moved to a later flight and ordered to a different gate as to stop any further harassment.

i better say something to her, connor thought.

"hey, thanks," he said to the girl as the colors faded back to normal.

the girl spun around, startled. "huh? oh, um, yeah, no problem." she suddenly was as shy as evan usually was, and she adjusted her glasses while directing her gaze to the floor.

evan seemed to pick up on this, and he sat up, patting the (now empty) seat next to him. "hey, c-come s-sit. i'm e-evan, and this is my s-soulmate, connor."

the girl smiled shyly and sat down, playing with her hands. "you can call me luna. sorry for the outburst. people like that just get me so... upset, to say the least," she giggled a little.

"are you part of the lgbtq+ community yourself?" connor wondered.

luna shook her head slightly. "nope, just a strong ally." she looked up to face the boys. "you two are a cute couple. i think i saw you on the news this morning... the today show?"

evan laughed a little. "y-yeah, i guess the s-story's really c-caught on."

before luna could say something else, the intercom switched on.

"flight 1879 to san francisco is now boarding."

"that's me. i better go. my family is expecting to meet me at the gate - they're probably wondering where i am right now." luna stood up and dusted off her jeans.

before walking away, she said one last thing: "you two deserve all the happiness in the world. i hope that's what you'll get."

she smiled one last time, grabbed a black backpack, and ran off.

"she was s-sweet," evan smiled.

suddenly, their flight was called to board. once they were in their seats, evan clenched connor's hand excitedly.

"i'm g-going home!" he whispered.

adorable. connor smiled widely and pulled evan as close as possible.

if we can just get through this flight...
