Cheryl had taken a liking to Veronica the first moment she'd stood up to her. It showed her a spark of fire that she'd only seen once in her lifetime. Yet in comes the new girl from the big NYC and the moment Cheryl does something not to her liking, in other words pissing off people that Veronica cared about, the petite brunette would fill with rage and use her words to hit her like a wrecking ball. Cheryl should have known that Veronica would become friends with Betty, the girl was trying to redeem herself from the activities she'd done in New York. That's right, Cheryl searched Veronica up, she wanted to know everything about this new pretty brunette that had ventured her way into her life unexpectedly. The next time she saw the brunette they weren't spitting insults at one another and Cheryl felt a slightly warm feeling in her chest, she liked her and Veronica getting along and if she wasn't wrong, she could see that Veronica seemed to prefer it that way too.
Cheryl had never meant to grow up cruel and manipulative, it was just the way her family had brought her up, always being scolded for the little things, being told she wasn't good enough, at least not like her brother yet she still adored Jason. She'd never say it out loud but he had been her hero, ever since they were little. He'd pick her up onto her feet and dust her down if she'd fallen, he'd protect her if ever anyone said something even mildly spiteful to her and he stood up to their parents for her, whenever they raised their hand to slap her like they had most days for no reason what so ever, Jason would swoop in and scoop her up in his arms before they could hit her - yelling at them to leave her be.
They were twins, yet Jason always seemed older. But she knew how Jason had really felt, he'd told Cheryl how much he hated being in their house, how much he just wanted to leave, be with Polly but Jason always knew their parents disapproved of the relationship. That he was to stay and become the next businessman like their father. It truly broke Cheryl's heart to see him upset, so she came up with the idea for him to fake his death, little did she know the goodbye on the other side of the river would be forever.
His death was never supposed to be real, just a hoax to trick her family yet here she was, sobbing miserably in the locker room where she'd stumbled upon Jason's jersey.
That was the first time since his death that she'd cried, her parents didn't allow it in their house, it was seen as childish and she'd tried so hard not to cry, so hard. But the moment she took the jersey in her hands, her breath caught in her throat and tears rolled down her cheeks. She couldn't hold it in anymore. She missed him.
Cheryl hadn't noticed the door opening and someone popping their head curiously around the lockers, hearing the redheads sobs. Cheryl's cries stifled when she felt an arm curl around her shoulders in comfort, Cheryl's watery vision finding a pair of chocolate brown eyes giving her a concerned look, Cheryl could see Veronica's eyebrows knit together and it felt like the only affection she'd gotten since she last saw her brother. Cheryl gave in and rested her head on Veronica's shoulders allowing herself to be vulnerable for once.
She wasn't a bad person really, even though people called her cold and heartless - she wasn't - it was just how she came across. Really, she just wanted to have someone care about her for once, to tell her that she wasn't just an unplanned child, she knew her parents hadn't wanted her, they'd wanted a boy. They'd got one but it just came with a plus one and nanna Rose was the one to convince her mother to keep her, the old woman was the only one other than Jason to look after her.
"It's going to be okay." Veronica's voice was soft, speaking to her as though she was fragile. Cheryl knew her words weren't true, but she was grateful for the brunette so she didn't agree, she just listened to her hushed words until eventually she lifted her head, tear stains down her cheeks but she'd finally stopped crying. Veronica glanced down at the jersey in Cheryl's hands, the number nine imprinted on it, she looked back up at Cheryl's slightly red face and gave her a sad smile. "Jason's?"
Cheryl sniffed and nodded, "He was the captain, he was so proud when he was offered the place...I remember him coming home with a big smile on his face." Cheryl recalled lovingly at the memory, that win had even put her parents in a good mood.
"...maybe you could ask the coach if you can keep it? I'm sure he would let you, it was your brother's after all." Veronica suggested, eyes darting between the upset redhead and the blue and yellow Riverdale jersey in her hands. Cheryl let out a breathy sigh but shook her head, placing the jersey back in the locker she'd found it in.
"It wouldn't be right, that's the captains number...and, um, if my parents found it they'd take it away...grieving isn't really acceptable in my house," Cheryl muttered it quietly seem as she never really opened up to anyone about her home life, mostly because it was a disaster, only worse now. She saw Veronica frown and before she could comment Cheryl was heading for the door. "We'll be late for biology, let's go."
Veronica would usually continue on the subject even when she knew someone was avoiding it but something told her not to carry on. She didn't want to upset Cheryl further and Cheryl clearly didn't want to talk about it. She just needed a friend right now and Veronica would happily be that friend because honestly, she liked Cheryl, she really did. Not just because of her gorgeous red locks, or doe brown eyes either, she knew Cheryl was sweet and kind somewhere under that layer of armour she'd put over herself. Veronica just had to show the guarded redhead that she wasn't just going to be the person who breaks through that armour and leaves, she was going to show her that she was going to break through it and stay.
